Yngve "Gust" Hendrickson died peacefully on October 26 in Los Altos, CA, surrounded by his wife and daughters. He was 90. Gust was born at home in Virginia, MN, on September 3, 1927, the youngest child of Greta Johanna (Hellberg) and Carl Gustav Hendrickson (Peuravaara).
Gust graduated from Virginia High School in 1945, and attended Virginia Junior College. He was drafted into the US Army in February 1946, and served as a general clerk in Japan with the Army of Occupation. He received his B.S. in chemistry from M.I.T. In 1951, and his Ph.D. In organic chemistry from the University of Illinois at Champaign in 1955. He then relocated to California and joined Chevron Research Corporation, where he worked on lubricants and greases until his retirement in October, 1986.
Gust met Nancy Gustavson through a single adults group at St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Berkeley. They were married at Emanuel Lutheran Church, Hartford, CT, on April 4, 1964, and had two daughters: Joyce Ellen, and Kristine Ann. They enjoyed spending time with family and traveling.
Gust was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Sons in Retirement, the American Chemical Society, and the Royal Chemical Society. He enjoyed photography and camping.
Gust is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy, of Los Altos, CA, and his daughters: Joyce Roe, her husband David and their children Carl and Linnea of Danville, CA; and Kristine Hendrickson, her husband Niels Smaby and their daughters Kendra and Annelise of Palo Alto, CA; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Vilma Anderson, Vendla Mikkola, Vivian Hayden and Vera Burnham.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM, November 12, 2017 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 401 Grizzly Peak Blvd., Berkeley, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shepherd of the Hills, the American Heart Association, or the American Diabetes
Association.
