Dana Naimi Obituary

Graveside services for Dana "Pat" Naimi, 82, of Portales will be at 2:00 PM, Saturday, July 23, 2011, in the Portales Cemetery with Rev. Michael Brunk officiating.
Dana Patricia Naimi was born August 5, 1922, in Bushnell, IL, the only child of Dana and James Walker and died July 20, 2011, in Portales.  On June 5, 1952 in Albuquerque, she was married to Omar Naimi. 
Pat attended Drake University, and graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in Spanish.  In 1975, she earned a doctorate in English from Oklahoma University.
The family moved to Portales in 1973.  In 1979, Mrs. Naimi established the local Battered Women's Shelter, of which she was the Director until about 2000.  The Governor named her as Outstanding Woman of the Year in 1997.  Mrs. Naimi served as President of the Coalition Against Domestic Violence in 1986, and received their Outstanding Leadership Award for 1994-95.  In 2004, the Hartley House named a wing of their building in her honor.
Pat was a very caring and giving lady.  She enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles.  For several years she collected stamps and worked on genealogy.  In more recent years, Pat became an avid football fan, and was devoted to the Chicago Bears.
She is survived by three sons, John Naimi of Portales, and David and James Naimi both of Des Moines, IA; an adopted daughter, Rosemary Brown of Portales; four grandchildren, Ryan Lightfoot, and Travis, Patricia and Jared Naimi, and two great-grandchildren, Vanessa and Chance. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, and by Dr. Naimi who died July 11, 2002 after more than 50 years of marriage.

I love you and miss you grandma Pat. You have always been in my heart and you will always be in heart until we meet again. You have sent me Christmas/Birthday cards every year since I was a baby... It was always one of the things I looked forward to the most. I will always remember you for being so kind and so understanding of my life. I love you....

I am so saddened by the passing of Dr Pat. She was a wonderful mentor and a a wonderful inspiration and friend. I will always remember the fun times and the laughter she brought. I will miss her Love Ronni
