Fern Elizabeth Cochrain was born April 30, 1924, in Portales, to the home of Bertha Mae (Porter) and Frederick Campbell, and died April 13, 2015 in Portales.
Fern was raised in the Bethel Community and attended school in Floyd. On December 11, 1942, in Portales, she was married to Montie Cochrain. Together, they ranched and farmed east of Elida for more than 62 years. She was a very outgoing, friendly lady, who loved to be with family and friends. Fern was always ready for a good cup of coffee, some laughs and a card game, and she usually had a fresh joke. Fridays were a highlight of her week when she got to visit with the ladies at the beauty parlor.
She was a longtime and very devoted member of the Elida Methodist Church. Fern was an Avon representative for the Elida and Kenna communities for more than 47 years. Her two daughters were a great source of pride. Fern taught them to sing, and they often sang together for church, or funerals. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she loved bragging on them and their families. Another great source of enjoyment for her was trading and selling things. She loved a good garage sale. After moving to Portales in 2006, Fern enjoyed attending the Calvary Baptist Church with her daughter La Verne.
The family wants to express a special "Thank You" to her caretaker, Amy Miller, and her beauty operator and special friend, Carrol Jones.
Fern is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, La Verne and Bobby Inge of Portales and Lovita and Dave Frusher of Fort Sumner, NM; five grandchildren, Leslie (Wesley) Addison, of Dyersburg, TN, Steve (Angela) Standifer of Carmel, IN, Cade (Cherise) Standifer of Portales, Montie (Michelle) Nickels of Savannah, TN and Austin (Jolene) Hale of Portales; twelve great-grandchildren, Colton and Clayton Addison, Lauren and Harlea Standifer, Katie Breese, Corbin Fruchey, Gunnar and Toby Standifer, Hailey and Lynsie Nickels and Jordan and Janae Hale; three sisters, Faye Lee of Portales, Irene Locke of New Caney, TX, and Frieda Miller of Floyd; and a sister-in-law, Alma Campbell of Portales.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Porter Campbell, Fred Campbell and Walter Campbell; three sisters, Mildred Campbell, Wilma Robinson and Mary Holland, and by her beloved husband, Montie Cochrain who died April 3, 2005 after more than 62 years of marriage.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary of Portales. 575-356-4455,wheelermortuary.net
