Ada Peacock Wells Obituary

Ada Alice Peacock Wells, 83, passed away at her home, with her husband holding her hand, on Nov. 28, 2023, in Tallahassee, Fla. Ada was born Feb. 22, 1940, in Perry, Fla., to Dr. W. H. Peacock and Marina Burnett Peacock.
She was native of Perry, Fla., but has lived in Tallahassee for the last 53 years. Ada Alice was the middle child of Dr. W. H. Peacock and Marina Peacock. They raised four girls and one boy, whom the girls called the king, who could do no wrong. Ada Alice and John started courting in high school; she was in the ninth grade and he was in the tenth. John says he stole her from the crib.
She taught school in Perry, and when John entered the Army she joined him in Columbia, S. C., until he transferred to the reserves. When John started working for Martin Marietta in Orlando, she taught there. Then back to Perry on the way to Memphis to teach and help support her husband while he was finishing his doctoral degree, then moved to Tallahassee in December of 1970, where she taught some but mostly subbed and took care of her son. She later became his office manager, as he kept calling her to fill in for staff calling in sick.
Ada Alice was named after her two grandmothers, Ada Peacock and Alice Burnett of Sale City, Ga. She was member of First Baptist.
Ada was preceded in death by her parents Dr. W. H. and Marina Peacock; her sister, Betty Ann Hughes; and brother, Bud Peacock.
Mrs. Wells is survived by her husband of 61 years, Dr. John M. Wells, Jr.; her son, John M. "Jay" Wells, III; her daughter, Dr. Wendy A. Wells; her sisters, Elaine (Jim) Herrington and Sharon Scott; her sister-in-law, Linda Peacock; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
