Guy Hood Obituary

Guy M. Hood, 83, entered Heaven's gates on Friday, May 23, 2025, singing one of his favorite Gaither hymns, "The King Is Coming." Guy was born on Feb. 8, 1942, in Gadsden, Ala., to Guy C. and Mabel Hood. He was loved and is survived by his wife, Sandra; children, Daryl (Mary), Paige Nichols (Tommy), Derrick, Becky Howell and Brian Mitchell (Shannon); seven grandchildren; two precious great-grandchildren; his sister, Kay Pugh (Jim); brother, Greg (Debbie); and many others who called him "PawPaw."
Guy was well respected in his personal and professional lives. He held only three jobs as an adult. Guy began his career as a teller at The American National Bank in Gadsden, accepted a position with The Alabama Credit Union League in Birmingham, where he rose within the ranks from Field Rep to Senior Vice President, and then was honored to serve as President and CEO of The Florida Credit Union League from 1988 until his retirement in 2009. Quoting one of his Credit Union colleagues, "Whether he was at the Capitol in Tallahassee or walking the halls with us in the U.S. Congress, Guy's passion and dedication were very evident to the lawmakers and all those he encountered." He was a mentor and a leader in the Credit Union movement.
Guy's beautiful bass voice was a blessing. Whether he was singing in the church choir, in a production at the Monticello Opera House, to his grandchildren who loved his rendition of "Teddy Bears Picnic," or picking his guitar and singing with family at home, he truly was talented. He loved to share his gift of voice. He also loved to cook, happily sharing recipes and talking food to anyone who would listen. Until his health began to decline, he would cook his personal creations and favorite dishes for small and large gatherings. He said the most important thing about cooking was to be fearless.
At Guy's request, there will not be a formal service honoring his life. However, a family gathering will be held in the fall, where we will share stories, memories and laughter. He would be humbled and appreciative if you choose to remember him by making a donation to the First Methodist Church of Monticello, where he was a member, the Jefferson County Humane Society (he had a heart for rescue animals), Big Bend Hospice in Tallahassee, Fla., or any charitable organization of your choice.
A life well lived and a man well loved.

Guy...a special friend to me throughout his career at the Florida Credit Union League. Relish our time together, especially over "therapy." May he rest in peace. Ray

Guy M. Was my uncle. Our mother was his older sister, by Guy C 's first wife.
We loved to listen to him sing.
It was a thrill to sit on the back porch of grandaddy farm and have everyone singing. I think that was done, after our water melon seed spitting contests.
He will be greatly missed.
But am thankful for the memories we have of him.
