Mark Baker Obituary

Mark Thomas Baker, a dedicated firefighter and beloved family man, passed away on July 10, 2023. Born on January 15, 1953, in San Diego, California, he was the son of Jack and Gwenyth Baker. Mark grew up alongside his brother Chris Baker, and together they shared cherished memories throughout their lives.
During his formative years, Mark experienced the joy of living in various communities between Oregon and California.
Mark attended Patrick Henry and Christian high schools in San Diego County, where he actively participated in athletics. He excelled in hurdles as a member of the track team and played basketball, a sport he continued to enjoy throughout most of his life. In recent years, he traded basketball for pickleball, embracing new experiences and challenges.
Following high school, Mark enrolled at Asbury Christian College with aspirations of becoming a math teacher. However, two important factors diverted his path-Sharon Miller, whom he married in 1975, and his passion for the fire service.
In 1973, Mark embarked on his fire service career with the California Division of Forestry, marking a turning point that led him away from teaching. Throughout his career, he held various positions, including Firefighter, Engineer, Lieutenant, Fire Captain, Battalion Chief, Fire Chief, and Director. He served with organizations such as the California Division of Forestry, Orange County Fire Authority, Flower Mound Fire Department in Texas, Cathedral City Fire Department, Laguna Beach Fire Department, Lakeside Fire Protection District, and Capstone Fire & Safety. His final role was as the Director of the Lakeside FPD.
Chief Baker's extensive career spanned both wildland and municipal fire service responsibilities. He contributed his expertise in areas such as fire engine specification, fire station design, training development, fire prevention initiatives, personnel management, and many other aspects of the fire service. Mark was a true professional, dedicated to his craft and deeply committed to serving his community. His love for God, his family, his friends, and his country was evident in all he did.
Chief Baker is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Baker, their sons Luke and Timothy Baker, and four beautiful granddaughters, Trinity, Aurora, Rylann, and Kaylee. He also leaves behind his brother Chris, as well as numerous aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Mark's presence will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched.
In honor of Chief Baker's memory, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a fire service-related charity or organization of your choice.
Mark Thomas Baker will forever be remembered as a committed firefighter, a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a friend to all who knew him. His legacy of selflessness, dedication, and unwavering faith will continue to inspire generations to come. May his soul find eternal peace.
