Arthur Getzelman Obituary

Arthur E. Getzelman Hampshire Twp., IL Arthur E. Getzelman, 84, of Hampshire Twp., passed away Friday, November 13, 2009 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. He was born October 18, 1925 on the family farm in Hampshire Township the son of Harry and Edna (Helson) Getzelman. He was a 1943 graduate of Burlington Township High School. Art was an Angus-Chianina livestock breeder in the Hampshire area his entire life, and was active in the 4-H both as a member and later as a 4-H leader. Art loved to bowl and he was a member in many leagues both in Hampshire and Elgin over the years. He was the center and the leading scorer for the 1943 Burlington High School's basketball team which won the District Tournament in the Illinois State High School tournament that year. Because of this, Art was elected to the Central High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. Art was a longtime member of the Zion United Methodist Church in Hampshire. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley (nee Stout) whom he married November 3, 1948 in Burlington, IL; his children, Jean (James) Travi of Amboy, IL, A. Robert (Christine) Getzelman, DVM of Ft. Collins, CO, Thomas (Brenda) Getzelman, DVM of Hampshire, IL and Ann (fiance, Brian Sebastian) Getzelman of Hampshire; seven grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn Mitchel of Spokane, WA; and three brothers, Lyle "Pete" (Betty) Getzelman of Bountiful, UT, Leroy (Ruth) Getzelman of Hampshire, and Richard (Florence) Getzelman of Hinckley, IL and a sister-in-law, Helen Schultz of Marengo, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his two brothers, Lloyd Getzelman and Donald Getzelman. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 20, at the Zion United Methodist Church, 157 W. Jefferson St., Hampshire with Pastor Jim Ketzel officiating. Burial will be in the Burlington Twp. Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, at Zion United Methodist Church and also on Friday prior to service from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be directed to the Zion United Methodist Church or to the Central High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
