Franz Stockmann

Stockmann, M.D., Franz J. 94, died Saturday December 11, 2010 at Holy Cross Village, South Bend, Indiana from complications of pneumonia. A practicing physician in Elgin for almost 30 years, he was on staff at both Sherman and St. Joseph Hospital and had an office in Elgin's westside. He retired from his practice in 1988. He was born in 1917 in Bad Camberg, Germany to Margarete and Hubert Stockmann, one of four children. He received his medical degree in 1939 in Munich, Germany and served as a physician in the German Army on the Russian front. Surrounded by the destruction of war, he did everything he could to save lives. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1955 and settled in Elgin in 1962. He was a longtime resident of Elgin and was very fond of his home town and the people he had contact with. A gentle man, he will be remembered for his wisdom, kindness and compassion. He was preceded in death by his three siblings, Walther, Herman and Gertrud. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Helga and his three children Franz (Elfrieda) Stockmann D.D.S., Ann (John) Stockmann-Firth and Karin (John) Stockmann-Mortensen, D.D.S. and numerous grandchildren. No visitation/wake is planned at this time. A cremation of remains is planned soon and burial in Elgin at a later time. The family asks to omit flowers.
