Harold Edward Scheid

Harold Edward Scheid Harold Edward Scheid died peacefully on Thursday, July 1, 2010 of natural causes at the age of 88. He was born on May 12, 1922 near Whiting, Kansas to Louis Scheid and Alvina (Els) Scheid. He was the last survivor of their eight children. Harold graduated from Holton High School in 1940, and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from Sterling College in 1946. His undergraduate schooling was interrupted by his enlistment in the U.S. Army, where he servedas a meat inspector in the Pacific Theater. He received a Master of Science Degree from Kansas Sate College in 1948, and did work on his Doctorate at the University of Chicago. Harold's career as a Biochemist/Nutritionist was mainly focused on animal nutrition. He was employed at the American Meat Institute in Chicago, IL, and spent the next five years doing poultry research for Honegger's Feed Company in Fairbury, IL. He was then employed for 15 years in the cat and dog food research division of the Quaker Oats Company in Barrington, IL. His last career position was Director of Research at Theracon, which was the research branch of Hill's Pet Products in Topeka, KS. It was at Theracon that he spent 18 years formulating Prescription and Science Diet cat and dog foods. Harold married Roberta Evelyn Long on June 6, 1948 in Alden, Kansas. Roberta died in April of 2007. Harold is survived by four sons and two daughters: Ronald (Penny) Scheid, Bruce (Lea Ann) Scheid; Gloria (Michael) Shields; Brian (Diane) Scheid; Randy (Julie) Scheid and Connie Scheid. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Harold was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed traveling the world, gardening and visitng family members. Many days, surrounded by his family, he enjoyed the view from his deck at Lake Summerset in Davis, IL. He was generous, kind and enjoyed people. He warmed a room with his big smile and delightful sense of humor. Harold will be dearly missed by his family and many friends, and will continue to be a role model to those who knew him. A visitation is scheduled for friends and family from 6:00-8:00 pm on Thursday, July 8th at McCorkle Funeral Home in Durand, IL. A private graveside service will be held on Friday morning.
