Andy Owens of Port Charlotte, Florida, passed away peacefully, following a sudden heart attack on Aug. 17, 2025, at age 65. Known for his smile and laugh, Andy will be greatly missed by so many.
Andy was born in Elkhart, Indiana, to parents Gordon and Margaret Owens. Andy grew up in Elkhart and graduated from Elkhart Central High School in 1979. He was an athlete in high school, participating in tennis, diving, football and track. Andy held the school's pole vault record for decades.
Andy went on to attend the University of Cincinnati obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture, graduating in 1983. He then attended the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, graduating with a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Sculpture in 1985.
After graduation, Andy moved to Chicago where he met his wife Lynn. They married in 1989 and raised their two sons in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan. Their eldest son Andrew Julius (A.J.) was born 1995 and younger son Alexander Gordon was born 1998.
Andy was a talented artist and built a career specializing in metal design and fabrication and bronze sculpture. Andy has multiple installations throughout the Detroit area both public and private as well as in many other states. His exceptional work was often featured in design magazines. He was known professionally as both a talented and competent artist. Designers, architects, suppliers and customers loved working with him.
Andy's athletic talents played a significant role in his life mainly in the form of road cycling. He was a strong, talented rider, who often pulled the group along from the lead position. An annual highlight was Andy's ride in the Michigan-based DALMAC bike tour. He and his biking friends would spend five days riding the roads of Michigan to return with tales of successful and not-so-successful days!
As Andy's life moved him to Port Charlotte, Florida, pickleball, golf, and boating added to his activities. Andy and Lynn loved spending time on the local golf courses and boating the Intercoastal Waterway as a couple or along with friends and family. They would boat to beaches and restaurants and never tired of seeing the dolphin and manatee.
Andy loved spending time with his family and friends. There were family vacations, hikes, dinners and celebrations, each with their own special memories, too numerous to list.
Andy is survived by wife Lynn (Horvath), sons Andrew Julius and Alexander (Megan), brothers Stephen (Tia), Patrick (Carolyn), father-in-law Louis Horvath, brother-in-law Louis Horvath (Karina) and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by brother Michael, parents Gordon and Margaret, and mother-in-law Antoinette Horvath.

My family and the Owens were great friends in the past. As kids, our mom's were always the best of friends. So very sorry to hear of this news, and I send the warmest of thoughts and heartfelt condolences to the family.

So sorry to read the news about Andy. Sending my sympathy to all the family. I have many happy memories of Andy as a 5 yr. old in my Kindergarten class at Lincoln School, in Elkhart IN. Even at his young age, he was very eager to learn, artistic & a joy to work with. I also enjoyed working with his parents & being with the family. I still have & use many of Peg's recipes, especially her cookie recipe & have passed it on to my children. Many years ago, I purchased an American Flag & Holder from Andy & attached it to our carport in Safety Harbor FL, where it waved for 25 yrs. That was my last contact with Andy, but he always had a special place in my heart. God's blessings to you all. Love, Sherry (O'Dell-Huneryager-Henry)
