Edward J. Lengerich

1942 - 2021

Edward J. Lengerich, born on Sept. 8, 1942, to Herman and Amelia Lengerich of Decatur, Indiana, passed away peacefully in his home in Elkhart on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2021, after managing symptoms of diabetes and polio for over 67 years.

Ed is survived by his wife of 55 years, Susie, his sister, Ruthie, his brothers, Ted and Mike, many in-laws, nephews and nieces, his children, Jim and Marita, Ron, Becky and Bob, his grandchildren, James and Madison, Nick and Caitlin, Dade, Raven, Ashlyn and Addie, and his great-grandchildren, Killian, Cooper and Declan.

Ed loved providing for his family and for the many families that worked for him at Quality Wood Products. As president of Quality Wood, he ensured that 18 families had food on their tables, clothes on their backs and roofs over their heads throughout Elkhart County's entire 2007-2011 recession – and some of that food included the vegetables that Ed grew in his garden and the deer and fish that he hunted himself. In addition to hunting, fishing, and caring for his garden, flowerbeds and yard, Ed enjoyed maintaining his vehicles and tools, watching high school, college and professional sports, voicing his opinion on politics and offering his daily prayers.

Ed never met a stranger: whether walking down the aisle at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, pushing a cart at Martin's supermarket or searching for the best slot machine at "the boat," he was never afraid to strike up a conversation or share a joke. And his generosity was felt by many: from those struggling abroad, to our local poor, to neighbors needing their gardens tilled or their driveways cleared of snow, he never turned down a request for help.

Throughout his final trials, and during his entire life, Ed was always upbeat, positive ... and ornery! Every day he worked hard, did his best, said his prayers, and then entrusted the rest to God and the Blessed Mother. He truly believed that "every day is a good day; some are just better than others," and reminded everyone that "it's all going to work out in the end."

Immediately following his passing, Ed's family gathered in his home to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial, and following his wishes, no viewing or visitation has been scheduled. But friends and family are encouraged to send their condolences, favorite memories and stories to the family. The Lengeriches wish to extend their deepest gratitude to all volunteers and staff of Elkhart's Wheelchair Help and Center for Hospice Care. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family would appreciate Mass Stipends sent to Father Bob at St. Faustina's Oratory, c/o Sue Lengerich.
