George S. Hinman

1929 - 2024

George S. Hinman, 95, of Belmond, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024, at his home in Belmond.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, at Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond with Pastor David Boogerd officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond and will continue one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Thursday.

George S. Hinman was born Jan. 20, 1929, in Belmond, Iowa, the son of Arthur C. and Marjorie E. Hinman. He was baptized and a lifelong member of the United Church of Christ (Congregational) in Belmond. He served on about all the boards of the church. He enjoyed being a trustee and helping with small jobs around the church. He graduated from Belmond High School. He worked on the family farm for a couple years and then joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean Conflict in the Pacific area for about four years. He furthered his education at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. He graduated from the Post Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

He married Imogene F. Halfpap on July 18, 1952, in San Diego, California, before being stationed in Hawaii. They celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary in 2024. After his service career, he joined the staff at the First State Bank and was an active employee for nearly 40 years. He enjoyed seeing people prosper and be successful. He began working as a bookkeeper and ended as the president of the bank. He remained on the bank board of directors after retirement and was a member of the 50 Year Club at the Iowa Bankers Association. He served on many community organizations: First State Bank Board of Directors, President of B.A.I., (area educational banking group), President of the Chamber of Commerce, was a charter member of the Belmond JayCee's (awarded Distinguished Service Award, and Boss of the Year), served on the Belmond Industrial Development Board, Belmond Public Library Board, North Iowa Medical Center Board, American Legion, Belmond Lions Club, and was on the original EMT volunteer crew. He was appointed as a trustee of the Chester P. Luick Memorial Trust and the Chester P. & Vida Luick Memorial Hospital Trust after the death of Luin B. Cox. He oversaw many community improvements through the funding of the Luick Trust. After retirement, he continued to be helpful to the community.

His recreational activities included playing the piano and organ by ear, wood working, gardening, golfing and of course playing cribbage. He gave away many of his garden produce, and was especially proud of his tomatoes. He loved his annual fishing trip to the Lake of the Woods. He and Imogene loved to travel visiting 49 of the 50 states. They spent over 30 years wintering in Mesa, Arizona, at the Good Life Resort. While the kids were young, they were known to travel all over the U.S. in their old converted school bus and spending summer days at the cabin at Clear Lake.

George is survived by his wife, Imogene F. Hinman, his daughter Jane K. Johnson (Eugene) Urbandale, Iowa, and sons Scott D. Hinman (Jennifer) Elkhart, Indiana, and Andrew C. Hinman (Dixie) Solon, Iowa. He has eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and one on the way. He was proceeded in death by his parents Arthur C. Hinman and Marjorie E. McGrann Hinman, son Jon A. Hinman, three brothers, Stephen N. Hinman, Robert O. Hinman, and Earl E. Hinman, four sisters Ellen Ahlstrom, Agnes C. Hinman, Ethelyn M. Benson, and Ruth M. Baldwin, and one great-grandson, Jake P. Hinman.
