Joel James Sonntag, 42, of Indianapolis, Indiana, formerly of Middlebury, Indiana, went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 29, 2025, at Greencroft Healthcare in Goshen, Indiana, following a battle with cancer.
He was born Dec. 2, 1982.
Joel is survived by his parents, James and Paula Sonntag, of Middlebury; four sisters; Charissa Schmidt (Scott) of Black Creek, Wisconsin, Chara Liang (Peter), Elizabeth and Evangeleen, all of Middlebury; four nieces, two nephews, cousins, and a dear great-aunt.
Joel enjoyed playing jaw harp with Joyful Noise Music Makers in ministries at nursing homes, festivals and churches. He had also been a volunteer at World Missionary Press in New Paris, Indiana. He found great joy in being an uncle and spending time with family.
The family will hold a celebration of life service at Pine Ridge Bible Church, Goshen, Indiana, at a future date. A private burial will be held at Forest Grove Cemetery in Middlebury.
In lieu of memorial trees or flowers the family requests donations be directed to World Missionary Press, P.O. Box 120, New Paris, IN 46553.
Yoder-Culp Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Many years together & many fond memories in Joyful Noise Music Makers with Joel. He really had that jaw harp moving & loved that twang!
Good years! Your family has been in my thoughts & prayers.
