Nicholas Hayes Obituary

Nicholas Scott Hayes, 63, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away on Jan. 23, 2026.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1962, in Union, Michigan, and grew up on Baldwin Lake, where he developed a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. He attended White Pigeon High School and graduated in 1980. A gifted athlete, Nick excelled in track and field and held several school records during his high school years.

Nick later became a licensed plumber, a profession he practiced for many years. He was known for his helpful nature and his readiness to assist others whenever needed.

Above all, Nick's greatest joy was his role as a grandfather. He shared a special and deeply loving bond with his grandchildren, Harper and Rowan, and treasured the time he spent with them. Being present in their lives brought him immense happiness, and the memories they created together will be forever cherished. Nick is also survived by his sons, Tony, Chris and Matt. Nick is survived by his mother, Beverly Hayes, and his sister, Shelly. He was preceded in death by his father, Ed Hayes, and his brother, Mike Hayes.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8, at the Cass County Conservation Club located at 13710 U.S. 12 in Union, Michigan. Family and friends are invited to gather to honor Nick's life, share memories, and celebrate the love he had for his family and those closest to him.

Just heard about Nick's passing. So very sorry. Shelly and I were great friends in school so knew Nick. He was a very nice person, yes a great athlete also. Sending hugs to all family.

I have known Nick my whole life. My father was his friend and he was my tee ball coach. I knew his sons through school and I kept in touch with Nick over the years sharing conversation and work trades. I am so sorry for your loss :( He loved his family sooo much!
