Richard H. Akin, 83, of Elkhart, passed away June 9, 2021, at IU Health Frankfort Hospital in Frankfort, Indiana.
He was born March 21, 1938, in Elkhart to Walter and Marie (Davis) Akin.
He married Martha White; she survives along with five children, Leigh Ann (Doug) Simmons, Michael Akin, Mark (Leah) Akin, Beth Ann (Allen) O'Donnell and Amy (Jeff) Gooden; and five stepchildren, Jack, Jerry, Robin, Brian and Brent. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Ruth Windmiller, Marjorie Akin and Robert Akin.
Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the 2 p.m. memorial service Tuesday, June 15, at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Reames Norton Cemetery.
Richard was a farmer who was around farms his entire life, was a heavy equipment operator, a member of Operating Engineers No. 324, a member of the Moose Lodge in Elkhart and a Cass County Auxiliary volunteer. He enjoyed collecting cast iron model farm and heavy machinery equipment and attending tractor pulls.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Elkhart Moose Lodge.

Richard was a great friend and co-worker that taught me a lot. I have had lots of great experiences and memories of him. I grew up around him and will always have him in my hart !! Trucking and farming together.

I have known Richard my whole life and he was just and all around good guy and friend for life. I remember when him and his father was in the case tractor dealership when Richard was just starting out in life. The news of him passing sure is sad to hear.
