Thomas "Tom" Miller, 83, of Cicero, Indiana, formerly of Elkhart, passed away peacefully on Feb. 28, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of generosity, scholarship, and steadfast devotion to family and community.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Barbara Miller, and his sister, Marilyn. He is survived by his first cousin once removed, Josh Kikta (Missy), and their children, Mikko, Zeke and Heikki, cousin Don (Kathy) Myers, and many, many friends.
Born Jan. 5, 1943, Tom was a proud graduate of "The" Elkhart Senior High School – before the city had two high schools – and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and later his master's in business administration from Michigan State University. His professional career began with RCA and Univac, where he contributed during the formative years of computing technology. He later returned to his alma mater to serve as an assistant professor of computer technology in the Purdue University School of Engineering and Technology at Indianapolis, where he influenced and mentored countless students.
Tom remained deeply committed to higher education throughout his life, holding membership in the Purdue University President's Council, the Michigan State University President's Club and the Tiffin University President's Club. He was also a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church in Elkhart.
Education was not only Tom's profession but his passion. Through endowed donations, he generously provided full-ride scholarships to numerous college students, creating opportunities that changed lives and establishing a lasting legacy of learning and achievement.
Tom treasured time spent with family and friends. He loved hosting gatherings at his house on the water, especially the cherished annual family reunion held over the Fourth of July weekend – a tradition that brought generations together in celebration and connection. Each summer, he also hosted a band picnic for Purdue Band student leadership, welcoming the new school year with fellowship, encouragement and support.
He will be remembered for his intellect, generosity, hospitality, and unwavering belief in the power of education. His impact will continue through the many lives he touched – in the classroom, through his philanthropy, and around his table.
His memory will be carried forward by those who benefited from his kindness, mentorship, and enduring commitment to helping others succeed.
Visitation for Tom will be held on Monday, March 16, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church where services will begin at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Sally Wicks will officiate and Tom will be laid to rest with his parents and sister at Rice Cemetery in Elkhart. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
