Mrs. Mary Emma Greenwood Aldridge, 88 of Elkin died Wednesday, August 21, 2013
at Madison Health and Rehab Center in Mars Hill, NC.
Mrs. Aldridge was born in Elkin, April 15, 1925 to Irvy and Mamie Whitaker Greenwood. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Elkin, a member of the Jonathan Hunt Chapter of the DAR, a Girls Scout leader for many years, a charter member of the Study Club, and was involved with the Garden Club. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, flower gardening, reading, and especially being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Aldridge was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Aldridge, and two special brothers, Andy and Wade Greenwood.
Surviving are her two daughters, Daphne Carter and husband David of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and Candace Rice of Mars Hill, NC. Her four surviving grandchildren are: Heath V. Carter and wife Crystal and children Mason, Dylan, and Allison of Myrtle Beach, SC; Heather C. Lankford and husband Jim and children Madison and Sydney of Salisbury, NC; Tilson Rice of Asheville, NC; and Luke Rice of Charlotte, NC. Mrs. Aldridge also leaves behind many loved nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday, at 12 noon at First United Methodist Church by Rev. Mark Barden, Dr. William D.(Chip) Aldridge, Jr., and Rev. Fred Jordan. The family will receive friends in the church parlor from 10:30 until 11:45 prior to the service. At the request of Mrs. Aldridge her body was donated to Medical Science at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
The family especially wants to thank Carolyn Martin, Deborah Pendergras, and neighbor and longtime friend, Dr. Robert Nicks, for the excellent care and help they have given Mrs. Aldridge during her health decline. The family suggests that any memorials be made to the Jonathan Hunt Chapter of DAR, 773 Brookwood Drive, Elkin, NC 28621 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
John Kennedy, funeral director is assisting the Aldridge family with funeral arrangements.
