Memories and Condolences
for Adolfo Quijano

Not sure what to say?

June 8, 2010

To the Quijano family,
My condolences and deepest sympathy. I used to carry Adolfo's and Tony Acosta's bags when they trained at a gym in downtown El Paso. I also watched him box many times at the coliseum. He was a very nice man. I remember a portrait of his wife at Manuel Acosta's Gallery. A fan, Abelardo Hernandez

I send my sincerest condolences for your loss. I may not have many memories of Uncle Dolph, but the ones I do have are filled with humor, character and great times. I remember one time when Santos and Dolph came to Mike and Aurora's (my grandparents) house for a short while. I stepped in from outside (wearing shorts due to the heat) and suddenly everyone (Santos, Dolph and Poppy) began comparing knees. I had knobby knees, but "oh no no" Dolph boasted "You have Boxer's Knees". Everyone had a good laugh at that.

While this is a time for remembrance and mourning, please remember the life he lead and how full of character and humor he was. A great man with a great legacy. I am proud to have known him.

The loss of such a great uncle, father, brother and friend is a difficult one to bear. Dolph was a man full of life. He certainly had more energy than most senior citizens. As I think back on the fond memories, a few stand out. I remember Dolph racing my brother Michael to the retaining wall at the far end of Santos’ back yard, then proceed to climb it… my brother was 8 years old, Dolph was in his early 70’s. The last time we saw Dolph was about 7 years ago. We were visiting with him and Sue at their home. Dolph was telling stories of the “good old days” with great animation. He talked of boxing matches, and sneaking away after dinner to all his married siblings’ houses, for more dinner. He certainly had a wonderful appetite, both for food and for life. During this visit, I sat beside Dolph. In the great excitement of the story, amidst all the animation of it’s telling, I was nearly given the great Quijano Boxer’s nose… yes, Dolph nearly landed his fist square on my nose. Stopping only an inch from my face, Dolph continued with his story, having absolutely no idea he had almost hit me. He also didn’t notice my parents, husband and brother, sitting across from me, silently laughing to themselves at the near miss and the obvious look of shock and bemusement on my face. But that was Dolph. Great storyteller, great uncle, fantastic brother and dad. We will miss him greatly and hope that he finds the peace one can only gain when hard times are over. We are sorry for your loss and will keep you in our thoughts and hearts.

With love,
