John Mason Obituary

John Michael Mason

John Michael Mason, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away in Dallas, Texas on December 28, 2020, at the age of 78. Born in Long Beach, CA, he moved to El Paso, Texas at a young age and grew up there, attending Austin High School. He left to attend the University of Texas, where he earned his BBA and cemented his lifelong love of the Longhorns. He served as a Lieutenant in the Navy from 1964-1966, and returned to El Paso to work as a stockbroker. In 1967, he married the love of his life, Burton (Adams). They were married for 53 years and were business partners as well as life partners. Together along with family and dear friends, they opened Wax and Wicks, The Mason Jar, and the Dish Market in El Paso. The family moved to Dallas in 1983 where John bought and ran Burris & Associates for two decades, finishing out his career — though he never lost interest in stocks or retail. He spent his life completely devoted to his family, ensuring the best life possible for his wife and daughters. And he built a lifetime of cherished friendships. He loved being on the water and in the mountains, fishing whenever he got the chance, and playing poker with his friends. John did everything with integrity and quietly led by example. We already miss his kind, wry smile and the twinkle in his eye. He is survived by his wife Burton and their two daughters, Wendy Mason (Jeff Gary) and Kelly Flautt (Aaron), all of Dallas; his sister Jere Andrews of Austin; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A private memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to the Parkinson Voice Project (646 N. Coit Rd, Ste 2250, Richardson, TX, 75080) or the North Texas Food Bank.

Junto con familiares y amigos, abrieron Wax and Wicks, The Mason Jar y Dish Market en El Paso.

I worked at Masons at Morningside Mall back in the mid ‘70’s. I went to college at UTEP and worked at Masons while attending classes. I loved the job!! John and Burton had Wendy while I was their employee. That was exciting. Working for them was a good experience for me. I learned a lot. John was a good influence on me. I moved away and have finally wound up in the Dallas area. My sympathies to go out to all of you!!
