MARGARET TOLBERT Obituary

TOLBERT Margaret Hudson Tolbert passed away on September 23, 2012. She was born in Canon City, Colorado on January 13, 1914. Almost 99 years old she was the oldest living graduate of Austin High School and among the first students when AHS opened. The Class of 1932 was the second AHS graduation class. She was the daughter of James Spencer Hudson and Julia DeArce Lopez. Her family moved to El Paso in 1916. She attended the Texas College of Mines (now UTEP) and San Jose State in California. In 1940 she married Gale Tolbert. They built a house on Frankfort Avenue in 1949 and Margaret lived there over 60 years until she moved to assisted living in June, 2012. She was the epitome of her generation: she quit work when she married to focus on and excel at homemaking and child rearing while her husband Gale established and ran TBL Insurance Adjusters. Margaret is pre-deceased by her husband, Gale, and her son, Tom. She is survived by sons Paul and Jim; daughter-in-laws Tanya Raven (Salinas, California), Evie Howard (Austin, Texas), Debra Dixon (League City, Texas); grandchildren Tasha Lindstrom (Barrett) of Salinas,California, Xan Tolbert (Keely) of Wichita, Kansas, Tom Tolbert of Dallas, Texas, Tami Kagy (Brian) of Austin, Texas, Gale Tolbert and Emily Tolbert of League City, Texas; and great-grandchildren Adia and Roark Tolbert of Wichita, Kansas, and Anders Lindstrom of Salinas, California. Because Margaret loved the Franklins and often spoke of this love, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to: Franklin Mountains Wilderness Coalition, 10525 Texwood, El Paso, TX 79925.

My sincerest condolences to the family of Margaret Tolbert. I have lived up the street for the last eight years and appreciated both her and her son Jim as neighbors. I will keep all of you in my daily prayers.

It broke my heart to read about Mrs. Tolbert's death. I wish that everyone could have known her, and I am so grateful that I did. In so many ways she was my second mom while growing up in El Paso. And how lucky I was to have her as my "other mother". To Paul and Jim, I wish you my deepest sympathy. We will each carry with us and cherish such wonderful memories of her as long as we live. May God watch over you in this time of sorrow. We will always miss her, and there will be an empty place in our hearts, but we know that she is well-taken care of now and has been greeted at the gates by your Dad and Tom.

Margaret was a great lady, full of grace, love, and kindness to everyone. She had an uncanny ability to relate to people across generations. I learned a lifetime of wonderful lessons from her. I will miss her deeply. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-granchildren, and always made her three daughters-in-law feel like they were her girls. We love you, MawMaw.
