MAXINE SILVA Obituary

A Celebration of the Life of Maxine L. Silva Maxine L. Silva passed away peacefully on November 12, 2013 after a blessed 97 years of life. A mother of seven, grandmother of 16, great-grandmother of 20, and great-great grandmother of eight, she was a living example of strength and determination, grace and dignity. Born on December 19, 1915 in El Paso Texas, she was the oldest of six siblings. She graduated from El Paso High School in 1934 and married Manuel M. Silva in 1935. She raised seven children while working as a civil servant until her retirement in 1976. She spent her remaining years enjoying the laughter of her grandchildren and continuing to emphasize the importance of education and social equality. Maxine remained a dedicated and selfless public servant and role model for El Paso throughout her entire life. She was instrumental in the establishment of Thomas Jefferson High School and fought for the educational needs of El Paso's youth through her involvement in the PTA and throughout her tenure on the EPISD board of trustees. Maxine devoted over 60 years of service to local boards and commissions, often paving the way for Hispanic women in public service. The Maxine L. Silva Magnet High School for Health Care Professionals is named in her honor. She will remain an inspiration to her family and community. Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all who will continue to benefit from her service and perseverance. Maxine is preceded in death by her husband Manny Silva and son Deane Silva. She is survived by sons Nick, Alfred, George, and Chuck Silva, daughters Florence Villarreal and Barbara Espalin, 15 granddaughters and one grandson, 20 great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren. The family would like to thank Cristina Guillen, Carmen Saenz, and the people of Hospice for their kind assistance. Visitation will be on Friday, November 15, from 5:00 to 9:00 pm, with a rosary service at 6:00 at Del Angel Martin Funeral home. Funeral mass will be at 9:00 am at Our Lady of the Light Catholic Church with burial following at Mt. Carmel cemetery.

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. We will miss you dearly..
