I ran across a photo of Ray tonight. I got online and found this Guest Book that I cannot believe I have not seen before. Ray, you are so missed by us all. Your absence has left a hole in our lives we can never hope to fill.

What can I say but that your raised one of the finest gentlemen it was my pleasure to have known. My heart smiled as I read the tributes and remembered his classmates. They were a great bunch of student/athletes with an abundance of "animo".
What can I say? I'll leave you and yours with a poem from Ray:

While growing up , Ray and Nick were a comfort zone for me. I have grown up with Nick and every time I talked to him, he always told me how Ray was . Without Ray, my Dad may not have the spunky, high school spirit he still has in his heart today. He was just telling me how he had a great lunch with Ray last week.
I am very thankful for the amazing person Ray was and the unique relationship he had with my Dad. Without their connection, I may have never known you, the amazing Portillo family. You helped my siblings and I feel so welcomed when it was our first year at St. Patrick's.
You are a family who always had open arms. Now it is my arms I open to you.

My family and I were saddened to hear of your loss. Our family will keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers. I pray to our Holy Father to comfort and strengthen your family in this time of sorrow. I was blessed to have known Ray and his family when I was in El Paso for Labor Day weekend a few years back. I was able to witness how much he was loved by family and friends, especially when we all went to a football game at Cathedral high. Every few steps someone was saying "hi Ray". He will be missed by many. He leaves a legacy of strong family values and faith to his family.

We have always been very honored that Ray considered us more than just friends. As he told Michelle, a long time ago, “I always thought we were related until about the age of twelve when my dad told us about Santa Clause and the Martinezes.”

We hope that you derive some measure of comfort in the knowledge that we share your grief. It saddens the heart when one of our own is sent to his Glorious Reward. But you can rest assured that Ray will not be forgotten by his brothers. Ray will be remembered on All Saints Day in November 2012 at the Cathedral High School Alumni Memorial Mass at the St. Patricks Cathedral.

Margaret and Jane join me in extending our deepest, deepest sympathy. Ray was one of the warmest, most loving persons I have ever known. He truly was the best! Since my son, Mark, introduced us in '78 he never changed. He was thoughtful and caring. Even among crowds he sought me out and in doing so he brought that special essence that defined him and made life that much sweeter. Thank you dear Ray for all that you were and will always remain---a ray of light.
