I ran across a photo of Ray tonight. I got online and found this Guest Book that I cannot believe I have not seen before. Ray, you are so missed by us all. Your absence has left a hole in our lives we can never hope to fill.

Andy,
What can I say but that your raised one of the finest gentlemen it was my pleasure to have known. My heart smiled as I read the tributes and remembered his classmates. They were a great bunch of student/athletes with an abundance of "animo".
What can I say? I'll leave you and yours with a poem from Ray:
"Sleep of silent splendor
As dawn draws near
Your sighs chase the mist
And chill this desert air
Sailing in upon your breath
The lead colored clouds
Lace atop high rugged rocks
Like silver cotton shrouds
"I cuddle now your golden gown
And dream these thoughts of Love:
The treasured times with timeless friends
Whom Jesus joins above
And if, my Lord, you gaze at me
To see within my thoughts
The Love I have for all who live
I pray >
Haz todo con Amor,
Zeke

Dearest Portillo Family and Friends,
This writing helped me greatly during a time of loss. I hope it brings you some comfort during these hard days ahead. Our thoughts are with you.
Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away
into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly
as it was. I am I, and you are you, and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by my old name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me. Let my name be the household word that it always was. Let my name be spoken without effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it.
Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was.
There is absolutely unbroken continuity. What is this death but a
negligible accident? Why should I be out of your mind because I am out
of your sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval somewhere
very near, just around the corner. All is well. Nothing is past,
nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before,
Nicolas and Kathleen

Without Ray, my Dad may not have the spunky, high school spirit he still has in his heart today. He was just telling me how he had a great lunch with Ray last week.
I am very thankful for the amazing person Ray was and the unique relationship he had with my Dad. Without their connection, I may have never known you, the amazing Portillo family. You helped my siblings and I feel so welcomed when it was our first year at St. Patrick's.
You are a family who always had open arms. Now it is my arms I open to you.
Ray's legacy is seen through his amazing wife and children. God Bless. Always in my Prayers.

To the Portillo Family,
My family and I were saddened to hear of your loss. Our family will keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers. I pray to our Holy Father to comfort and strengthen your family in this time of sorrow. I was blessed to have known Ray and his family when I was in El Paso for Labor Day weekend a few years back. I was able to witness how much he was loved by family and friends, especially when we all went to a football game at Cathedral high. Every few steps someone was saying "hi Ray". He will be missed by many. He leaves a legacy of strong family values and faith to his family.
Love and prayers,

We the Cathedral High School LQVQ Alumni wish extend to the Portillo family our deepest sympathy. There is little that we can say that will comfort you in this hour of your bereavement.
May you find solace in the inspiring memories of the exemplary life of our brother, Ray. May he enjoy his eternal rest and the rewards he has earned.
We hope that you derive some measure of comfort in the knowledge that we share your grief. It saddens the heart when one of our own is sent to his Glorious Reward. But you can rest assured that Ray will not be forgotten by his brothers. Ray will be remembered on All Saints Day in November 2012 at the Cathedral High School Alumni Memorial Mass at the St. Patricks Cathedral.

To all of Ray's Family:
Margaret and Jane join me in extending our deepest, deepest sympathy. Ray was one of the warmest, most loving persons I have ever known. He truly was the best! Since my son, Mark, introduced us in '78 he never changed. He was thoughtful and caring. Even among crowds he sought me out and in doing so he brought that special essence that defined him and made life that much sweeter. Thank you dear Ray for all that you were and will always remain---a ray of light.
Mark considered Ray as one of his most cherished friends; therefore, there's no doubt in my mind that he was there to greet and welcome his Compa.
