Sara Zangwill Obituary

Sara Olivares Zangwill went to our Lord, Jesus Christ, on November 8, 2008. Born in Chihuahua, Mexico to Sara Terrazas de Olivares and Pedro Olivares, Sara had 7 siblings. Her family came to El Paso during the Mexican Revolution and returned to Chihuahua when she was in her early twenties. She was the great granddaughter of General Luis Terrazas, a Mexican cattle baron. Sara was married for 50 years to Ayrton Israel "George" Zangwill (an English citizen who was employed in Mexico as a metallurgical engineer for American Smelting and Refinery Company). They lived in the American Colony of Avalos located adjacent to the ASARCO plant on the outskirts of Chihuahua. Two of their daughters, Edith "Coky" Bohanon and Maria Patricia "Patty" Holland-Branch were born while living in Avalos, Chihuahua. The family relocated to El Paso in 1950; where their third daughter Caroline Margaret Zangwill was born. Sara was a past member of the El Paso Women's Association in Metallurgical Engineers (WAIME'S), The El Paso Museum Guild and the Garden Club of El Paso. She was always very active in her daughters' activities. She worked as a substitute teacher at a local Catholic school in the 1950's where she was much loved by her students. Sara was deeply loved by her daughters and taught them to be devout to their faith to God, loyal to family and friends and proud of their heritage. A strong, beautiful woman, she had a great sense of humor. A gifted artist , her talent blossomed when she and George moved to Plainfield, New Jersey where she became active in local art communites. Sara received several recognitions and awards for her clay sculptures and oil paintings and continued her art work into her 90's. She loved beautiful flower gardens, the power of the ocean, and the grandeur of God's nature which all became themes for her oil paintings, charcoal and pencil sketches. Her love of people and children were reflected in the genius of her clay and bronze sculptures, many of which she gave to family and friends. George and Sara also found a new hobby and many friends in the Cranford Community Theater. Sara used her many artistic talents backstage and George was an actor and lighting director. Sara, always gracious to anyone she met regardless of religion and ethnic background, was loved by all who knew her and was a lady to the end. Sara's family includes Coky (Charles) Bohanon, Patty (David) Branch and Caroline Zangwill. Sara had 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and was predeceased by her husband and great grandson Christopher, her parents and all her siblings. She is also survived by her very special "adopted daughter", Shirley Floyd and her angels Maria Elena and Alejandro Arcos. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be sent to either Alzheimer's Association or American Cancer Society.

Aunt Sara will always have a special place in my heart. She loved life and all it's beauty. She shared her youthful spirit with me in very poignant visits and the laughter and fun is what kept her young.
She is now with God and her sisters and I can only imagine the havoc that they will create in heaven.

Sara was the sister of our mother Blanche Olivares Frink here in Calif. Sara and Blanche were loving sisters, it was just great to sit there and listen to them tell stories of the years gone by. We all loved it when we heard Sara was coming west for a visit. She lit up the houshold with her zest for life and her wisdom. All of the our family has nothing but love and fond memories of Sara. She was truly one of a kind & a inspiration to us all.

Sara and George enriched the lives of those of us in a band of players named Los Pobres. Sara, always a beautiful classy lady and George, always the hard working lighting designer. We hurt by Sara's departure.

My prayers and sorrow are with the family at this time.
I always admired her paintings, she had a story that could be told through her paintings.
May God Bless.
