Mary Marguerite Melanie Kathleen Gates was born at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis at 9:39 am Monday, December 8,2025 on the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary to her loving parents Aaron and Angela Gates. She was the greatly anticipated baby sister of her 7 siblings. Mary Marguerite was a feisty little girl who in utero was very active and entertaining, arm blocking every attempt to get a good view of her unique little heart. She came into the world weighing 7 lbs. 5 oz and measuring 19 ¾ inches long a month early due to expected complications with both mom and baby. The doctors and nurses were incredible, taking her out quickly and running her to the NICU where she received phenomenal care from so many amazing individuals. Mary Marguerite blessed her family with 5 days of bonding and memories that will last forever in their minds and hearts. On the feast day of Our Lady of Guadelupe, God walked with Mary Marguerite's family and perfectly orchestrated things so that Mary Marguerite was able to meet a great deal of friends and family. Mary Marguerite passed away peacefully a little after midnight on Saturday December 13, 2025, while being loved and held by her parents.
She is survived by her parents, Aaron and Angela Gates of Chisholm, MN, seven siblings, Christian Schmidt, Cecilia Schmidt, Nicolas Gates, Jonah Gates, Anthony Gates, Reuben Gates, and Benjamin Gates, all of Chisholm, MN, maternal grandparents, Robert (Kathleen) Olson, Ely, MN, paternal grandparents, Myrick and Melanie Gates, Chisholm, MN, maternal great-grandparents, Robert (Patricia) Olson, Ely, MN, uncles, Andrew Olson, Ely, MN, Shawn (Hope) Gates, Sauk Rapids, MN, and Jesse Gates, Chisholm, MN, three cousins, Brandon Hammond, Kailani Gates, and Tristin Gates, along with many great aunts, uncles, close relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her paternal great-grandparents, Edward and Miriam Klancher, Florence and Lee Gates, infant siblings, Frances and Miriam Gates, Maternal great-grandparents, Stephen and Winifred Gheen, and Aune Jokinen Gheen.
Funeral services for Mary will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, December 20, 2025, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Chisholm, MN. The Rev. Fr. Daniel Weiske will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. There will be a visitation from 12:30 p.m. until the 1:00 p.m. funeral Mass at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Chisholm Cemetery in Chisholm, MN. Arrangements are entrusted to Rupp Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Chisholm.
