Edwin Guenther Obituary

Edwin John "Bud" Guenther Jr., 97, Marthasville, passed away Monday, July 25, 2022.

He was born March 2, 1925, in St. Louis to the late Edwin Guenther and wife Dorothy, nee Call. Bud, a World War II veteran, joined the U.S. Navy, July 28, 1943, and served as a machinist on a submarine with tours to South America and Australia. He was honorably discharged Feb. 25, 1945. He achieved the rank of seaman second class and was awarded the Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Philippine Liberation Medal. After the war, he attended Washington University, where he studied drafting and went on to work as a draftsman for McCabe Powers, until he retired at the age of 60. He married the love of his life, Beverly Iris Bottoms, May 10, 1952, in St. Louis, and to this union, they had three boys, David, John and James. Bud liked Big Band music and woodworking. He was also a very talented artist and woodcarver. Bud was always available to each of his three sons while they constructed their own families' homes, offering both physical and experienced help. He will be missed by everyone who knew him, including the staff and other veterans at St. James Veterans Home.

He is survived by his three children, David Guenther and wife Wendy, John Guenther and wife Toni, and James Guenther; seven grandchildren, Andrew, Rebecca, Jonathan, Jessica, Clinton, Paul and Emily; three greatgrandchildren, Jacob, Macie and Shay; many other family members and friends.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Dorothy, and his loving wife, Beverly.

Private services will be held.

Jim
I'm thinking back to the time I came out to your old house on the day you were pouring the concrete driveway.
Although I didn't do much to get the concrete placed, I did spend a fair amount of time at the buffet table with both of your parents! Two of the kindest people I've ever met. Sorry for your loss.

Dear family and friends of Bud,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Buds passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor during WWII on the USS Blueback SS-326 and USS Loggerhead SS-374.
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
To the family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).
Jim Sandman, FTC(SS) Ret,
National Chaplain, USSVI.
