Joseph Modugno Obituary
- 1940 ? 2025 -
Joseph "Joe" Modugno, 84, Washington, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
Joe was born Aug. 12, 1940, in Harrison, New York, to Victor and Martha (nee Phelps) Modugno. Together they had three children: twin sons Joseph and Eugene (1940) and a daughter, Marsha (1943). Joe grew up in Harrison, New York, and graduated from the University of Missouri, Colombia, with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
Joe was known for his love of the outdoors, his humorous personality, his love of military history, his Italian heritage, his love of opera music, and his famous authentic Italian spaghetti and meatballs. Joe deeply loved his family and immediately accepted his new in-law family as his own when he married Ann (nee Christen) in 2000. He loved, supported, and encouraged his grandchildren and always brought humor into every situation. Joe was generous in sharing his love of the outdoors with his grandchildren. He brought them to his home in Labelle, Missouri, every November and taught them to hunt and fish along side their father Mark, who became Joe's greatest friend. Mark and Joe created many memories hunting, fishing, and talking about the land they both loved. While Joe spent time in Labelle, he became a part of a community of families who loved and supported each other. Carl Reins and Chris (Cheeseburger) Parrish, Labelle, Sandy Fowler, Washington, and Freddie BaChelly, Colorado were friendships Joe cherished immensely. Joe will be deeply missed, but his many "one-liners" and wonderful memories with friends and family will be in our hearts forever.
Joe is survived by his wife, Ann Modugno, Washington; sister Marsha Derenthal, New Hampshire; children: Michael (Michelle) Modugno, Union, Sheri Michelle Modugno, Washington, D.C., Lisa (Mark) Hoemann, Washington, Missouri, and Don (Angela) Hunt, Stoney Hill; his grandchildren: Ben Hoemann, Luke Hoemann, Matthew Hoemann (Grace), Sarah Hoemann (Griffin Tinkey), Sam Modugno, Will Modugno, Ella Modugno, Nathaniel Modugno, and Zachariah Modugno.
He was preceded in death by his parents Victor and Martha Modugno; and his brother Eugene, who married Coral and had two daughters and three grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday, March 3, at St. Gertrude Catholic Church, Krakow. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the Old Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Gertrude.
The Modugno family is served by Oltmann Funeral Home, Washington.
