Thomas Pickert Obituary

Thomas Roger Pickert, 39, Kansas City, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017.

Tom was born in Blue Springs, the fourth child in a family of six siblings. He attended St. John LaLande and St. Regis grade schools. He graduated from Archbishop O'Hara High School in 1996. In 2000, he graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, with dual degrees in French and philosophy. During college, he spent seven months studying in France, including a semester at Le Sorbonne in Paris. He attended the University of Kansas School of Law, graduating in 2004. While in law school, Tom participated in the Environmental Law Moot Court and was a member of the KU Law Review. He worked as a law clerk for two years before taking a position as an associate at Logan, Logan and Watson in Prairie Village, Kan. After seven years, he and his law school classmate started their own law firm, Fowler Pickert, LLC. In 2017, they joined with a third partner to create Fowler Pickert, Eisenmenger, LLC. Tom was named Best of the Bar^by the Kansas City Business Journal. His commitment and dedication to his legal practice was well known and respected among those who knew him personally and professionally.

A lifelong athlete, Tom enjoyed a variety of athletic endeavors throughout his life, ranging from martial arts to yoga, and golf to rugby. His primary athletic interest was running. He completed numerous sub-3-hour marathons, and on his first attempts at both, qualified for the Iron Man World Championships for half and full Iron Man competitions.

Aside from his academic, professional and athletic achievements, Tom's greatest achievement in life was the life he built with Emily, nee Riegel, his wife of 16 years. Tom and Emily met early in college and married in 2001. They welcomed their sons over the subsequent years, and Tom's devotion to his two young boys was beyond compare.

Tom is survived by his wife and two sons; parents; four sisters; one brother; his grandmother; 13 nieces and nephews; aunts; uncles; cousins; as well as his extended family of in-laws. He also leaves behind a large community of friends and colleagues across the city and throughout the country.

A public memorial was held Thursday, Nov. 9, at 3 p.m. at Community Christian Church, 4601 Main St., Kansas City.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Tom Pickert Memorial Fund at Country Club Bank, 414 Nichols Road, Kansas City, MO 64112, which will go toward helping achieve Tom's dream of providing for his sons' college educations, and other causes to help make the world for them a more peaceful and just place.

I am extremely sorry for Tom's tragic passing. I had the pleasure of working with Tom at Logan Logan & Watsonquite a while ago. Tom was such a nice guy to work with. He would always have a cute story about Henry to tell, or a new list of names that you was being considered for baby Leo. He was very proud of his family. We always had piles of files and boxes everywhere, but he knew when we all needed a quick joke.

Emily, I'm still at a loss for words and have been praying that you find strength and peace. I remember when I left the street Tom said, "You'll never find neighbors like us again" and he was right. I so enjoyed our conversations. I was out of town for the service, but my girls were there. Thoughts and more prayers.

Unfortunately I couldn't make the memorial service today. I only met Tom a couple of years ago. Our financial firm works with his law firm. It's hard to believe that someone so funny and full of life is gone. I will always remember what a truly nice person he was. He definitely brightened the room and left you with a smile on your face. I will truly miss him.

Thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones.

I am so saddened by this tragedy. Although Tommy and I weren't great friends, we were at O'Hara together. I was in the graduating class of 1997. I always remember him as a nice and outgoing person. The one thing that I remember most about him, is that we share a birthday. He called me his birthday buddy. I just want to let you know that every year on my birthday I think of him and I will continue to think of him and celebrate for the both of us!

Tom,
You were truly one of a kind. Throughout my life I don't think I have ever met a more kind person. Praying for your wife, children, family and friends. God Bless you and may you Rest In Peace.

I met Tom in 7th grade at St. Regis. He was the new kid who was funny, outgoing, and not afraid to be himself. He thought he was pretty cool. He was! During our 4 years of French class at O'Hara many more times of laughter were shared. When I found out he was an attorney, I chuckled. Growing up, he would negotiate everything, and he was good at it! He also stood up for what he thought was right.

I offer my deepest sympathies for his family and friends. No words can alleviate their pain, but I hope all these memories of Tom will make them smile and know that he was thought fondly off by so many,

Remembering all of the crazy, fun times over the years with Nicholas and Melissa and the O'Hara gang. We watched Tommy grow and mature into a fabulous adult, husband, and Dad. We will never forget him. He was taken way too soon. Love in our hearts for Emily, Henry and Leo.........Rick and Rita Freeman
