Constance Daniel Obituary

Constance Page Daniel

Constance Page Daniel, 101, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died on Monday, October 3, 2011, at her home, Martha Jefferson House.

Mrs. Daniel was born in Charlottesville on January 4, 1910, to Elinore McGlone Page and James Morris Page, Dean of the Faculty of the University of Virginia. Her childhood years were spent between their home on McCormick Road, on the grounds of the University, and the family's farm "Old Keswick" in Cismont, Virginia. She graduated from Lane High School where she was captain of the basketball team, after which she attended The College of William and Mary, Cornell University, and in 1931 earned a bachelor's degree in the College of Arts and Sciences in English at the University of Virginia.

She was married at Grace Church in Cismont in 1934 to James Nelson Daniel of Charlottesville. They moved to Newport News, Virginia, where they lived for their 52 years of marriage. They enjoyed sailing at the Hampton Yacht Club, and many wonderful summers at their home "Cricket" on the Piankatank River in Mathews County, Virginia. Mrs. Daniel was an educator and Principal of St. Andrew's Day School in Newport News for 13 years.

She was predeceased by her husband; her sisters, Elinore Page Parish of Richmond, Virginia, Anne Page of Newport News; and a brother, James Morris Page Jr. of Chicago, Illinois. She was a member of Gamma Kappa Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority; the Newport News/Warwick chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; the Daughters of the Founders and Patriots of America; and the Daughters of American Colonists. She was a founding member of St. Matthew's Anglican Church in Newport News. She is survived by a brother, John Cary Page of Lynchburg, Virginia; two daughters, Anne Daniel Fowler and her husband, Bruce, of Newport News, Constance Daniel Palmer and her husband, Jud, of Charlottesville; a son, James Nelson Daniel Jr. of Glenview, Illinois; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Daniel moved back to Charlottesville in 2006, and resided at the Martha Jefferson House. During these years, she was a member of the University of Virginia Medical Center Auxiliary, knitting dozens of caps for the Newborn Nursery and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. She especially loved the Anglican College Ministry to University students. Throughout her life she touched countless lives, and will be remembered for her quick wit, keen sense of humor, strong faith, unconditional love and devotion to family. A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Cismont, Virginia, 2 p.m. Friday, October 14, 2011, with the Reverend Paul Nelson Walker, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Martha Jefferson House, 1600 Gordon Avenue, Charlottesville, VA 22903-1918.

I remember Con at St. Matthew's she was such a great lady and loved to meet with us when we were doing crafts. I remember the day she came in and said I just got my license renewed and I can drive to 100. We had some real good times. Sending deepest sympathy to her family.
