David Armor Obituary

David Howell Armor, 91, died peacefully on August 25, 2018, at St. Mary's Home of Erie. He was born in New York City, to two artists, Mary Jackson Armor, a musician, and Morris Howell Armor, an actor.

David spent his childhood in Manhattan and adolescence in White Plains, N.Y., where he completed high school. He enlisted in the Army Air Force, but never saw combat. He then graduated from Stanford University with a B.S. in Psychology. At the urging of his wife, he returned to college and earned a B.S. in Mechanical Design Engineering from New York University.

From 1961 to 1987, he worked as an engineer at General Electric, in Syracuse, N.Y., then Lynn, Mass., and, finally Erie, where he moved his family in 1971. He inspired great admiration from his colleagues (and also a bit of frustration for those in charge of timelines and budgets) as he was absolutely unwavering in creating foolproof fuel systems and circuit breakers for GE's locomotives. Many years after his retirement, others noted that his designs were among the only ones that never failed. His passion for design was also funneled into spending years building and improving his family's residence on Lake Erie. Once retired, he pursued physical fitness and volunteer work. He served on the Board of Directors of Stairways, Inc. for 26 years. He was an avid member of the YMCA, Mensa, and a Buddhist study group. He, with his late wife, was an oblate with Mount St. Benedict. In the 1990s he acted in several productions of Erie's Roadhouse Theater, and immensely enjoyed the challenge and camaraderie of experimental plays.

He was predeceased by his son, Gary, and his wife, Cecile Barth Armor.

David is survived by his daughter Kelly Armor and her husband John Vanco.

The many who knew and loved him will remember him for his abundant hugs and outrageous questions, his zest for life, his commitment to liberal causes, and his love of music and dancing.

I am so sorry that I did not see this until tonight. I just want to say that David had a fierce need to protect the rights of individuals who were not treated with full respect. He helped me understand people in my own life and why they thought or acted as they did. I will forever remember him and this wife for all they contributed to Stairways. Thank you for sharing him with all of us!

What an honor and blessing it was to know David as colleague at Pax Christi USAwhere he worked countless hours perfecting our data base, as a co-conspirator for peace and justice at myriad demonstrations, vigils, and marches, as an oblate in community and as a friend. His passion for peace and justice was based in a profound love of life, soaring dreams of what could be, and empathy for the pain and suffering of others. We had conversations about so many different topics.
With hat on his head, smile on his face and energy in his whole being, and a booming voice, his entrance into any space was impossible to miss. He teased and taught, prodded and applauded, listened with curiosity and compassion to all.
What a gift he was, to me, to all of us, to the world. Even more recently, his spark for lifeand his hat.were present.
Prayers and love to you, Kelly, as you celebrate his life and grieve your loss. I'm so sorry I'll be away and not able to be with you on the 6th.

I didn't know him as well as my brother Kirk, but I'll always remember a delightful afternoon we spent with David and Cecile, about 10 years ago, on the deck of their Lakeside Drive home. I had moved to California and hadn't seen them for many years, yet he was still so excited and enthused to hear about what I was up to. "Zest for life" - no question about it!

David's visits to the Iroquois Branch Library were a highlight of my days when I worked there. What a brilliant and engaging man he was! I'm sure he'll be sorely missed by family and friends. My prayers go out to you.

David was one of the most influential people in my life. "The many who knew and loved him will remember him for his abundant hugs and outrageous questions, his zest for life, his commitment to liberal causes, and his love of music and dancing."

Yes, yes, and yes. I was so extraordinarily fortunate to have become his friend when I was just a teenager, many decades ago.
