David Hanlin Obituary

David J. Hanlin, age 75, of Erie passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday June 21, 2011 at "Eagles Nest", his acreage of timber and wetlands in Corry, Pa. He was pursuing his passion of habitat enhancement to aid wildlife. He was born on July 15, 1935 in Erie the son of the late Joseph and Goldie Hanlin. David was a graduate of Strong Vincent High School, Penn State University and received a Masters degree in 1969 from Gannon University. He was director of Engineering at Erie Malleable Iron for several years and took an engineering position with ARAMCO in Saudi Arabia. At the time of his death, he was President and CEO of Intech P/M Stainless Inc. located in Ridgway, Pa. Dave's love of hunting and the outdoors was instilled by his grandfather, a half- Iroquois Indian who first took him hunting when he was eight years old. Since then he has journeyed to six continents and collected more than 286 record trophies from nearly one hundred countries. His hunting and conservation activities include being a member and or contributor to numerous organizations including SCI (Safari Club International) where he has served on and chaired a number of committees; North American Elk Foundation; International Sheep Hunters Association; United for Conservation SA; Boon and Crockett; Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation; National Rifle Association and Weatherby Foundation International. In 2004 Dave was honored with the 48th annual International Weatherby Hunting and Conservation Award, one of the most prestigious awards in the world of hunting, recognizing outstanding support for wildlife conservation, lifetime hunting achievements and dedication to the principles of ethical sport hunting. He was also a contributor and benefactor of the Findley Lake Nature Center and was a member of the Sportsman Club and Erie Club. Dave authored "Around The World and Then Some" chronicling his life, travels, and hunting experiences, which was published in 2010. His family and friends will certainly miss his dry sense of humor and quirky personality. Dave is survived by his beloved wife Mary (Kondak) Hanlin; three children David Hanlin, Jr.and his wife Kristen, Patrick Hanlin, and Renee Hanlin along with five grandsons and his brother, Gary Hanlin and his wife Tania of Satellite Beach, Fla. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Saturday July 2, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 2801 W.6th St., Erie. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Findley Lake Nature Center, PO Box 634, Findley Lake, NY 14736 or the Weatherby International Expo Childrens Program, 1025 John Moore Dr., Oshkosh, WI, 54904. I have fond memories of cousin David from all the summers we spent at Aunt's Chris' summer home on Lake Erie. We had a mini reunion a couple summers ago and had dinner with him and Gary down on the Erie marina. I am glad we had that opportunity to see him again. I am sorry for your loss. Mary and Family: I have not seen Dave for @ 25 years. I made email contact with him last year and we intended to get together. I regret this never happened.
I met Dave when I was about 14 and he was 18. I loved the outdoors and Dave took me hunting and fishing and was my mentor. Dispite the age difference we were best friends and did everything together.
Dave wanted me to join him and other friends to go on his first big expidition to Alaska but I declined as I would have missed my first year of collage. I'm sure now that I would have gained a greater life education had I gone with him.
My deepest sympathy to your entire family. I will remember for ever the things Dave taught me.

Mary, Gary, and Tania,
Anne and I were so lucky to have met Dave and only wished we knew him longer. He was so successful yet so humble about his many accomplishments in business, hunting and conservation. I am so thankful for having his book so I can keep his memory alive forever. Dave lived a very full life and he was truly thankful for his many blessings as evidenced in all that he gave to others. We offer our deepest sympathies to all three of you for your loss.
Love,
Terry and Anne Yeager
