To everyone that extended their condolences and shared a memory of Gram, thank you.
Gram touched many people beyond her immediate family... which is a large one! She was always there to lend a hand, listen and tell stories. Pour Gram a cup of coffee and she'd sit and reminisce. And her homemade banana bread made these moments a little extra sweeter.
Gram was a huge influence in my life.
Her family gathered at her home for most holidays. To this day, I love gathering with friends and family, whether it be while visiting Erie, or opening our home in Utah to family and friends.
Gram was thankful and gave back. Whether she was making ribbons and rosaries and sending them to people who may be in need of a prayer, selling poppies to help our veterans, sharing a meal with the guys at the Soldiers and Sailors home, raising money for Cystic Fibrosis, volunteering her time with Catholic Daughters, the American Legion, St James Church and other organizations she was passionate about, Gram did what she could to help others. And while it never seems to be often enough, I think of Gram every time I volunteer. And I hope this is something that I'm able to inspire in my child.
Gram was fiercely independent and never afraid of a little hard work. Possibly out of necessity, as she was a widow while she still had children at home to care for -- one of them with Downs Syndrome. Gram inspired a family of workers and we all seem to figure out how to get things done.
And she was strong. Life wasn't easy for Gram, yet she didn't complain (at least not that I recall). She lost her baby girl Brenda (a loss I never understood until losing Aurora). She lost her husband and did her best to continue to provide for her seven children, including a son with Downs Syndrome that has always lived at home where Gram was the primary caregiver until her very last breath. She lost her son Mark (a heartache I hope I will never experience). Regardless of Gram's heartaches, she always seemed to appreciate what life offered her and did what she could to make a difference for others.
For all of these reasons and more, I will always be grateful for the time I had with my Grandmother. Selfishly, I wish she was still here with us today, though it gives me peace to know she's now caring for Brenda and Aurora.
Please keep Gram alive in your hearts and continue to think of her and share your stories and memories.
