Dorn Howlett Obituary

Dorn Howlett, age 81, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, died on August 20, 2013. He was formerly from Edinboro, Pennsylvania, where he and his wife resided for 40 years before moving to Michigan in 2008.

Born in West Chester, Pa., he was a son of the late David P. and Doris (Brundage) Howlett.

An art educator, he earned two degrees from Penn State and completed his doctoral studies at Ohio State. Beginning in 1953, he taught and supervised art in the public school systems of Cumberland, Perry and Warren Counties. He was also a track and field and cross country coach. From 1956-58, he served in the U.S. Army as a medic and as a draftsman-illustrator.

In 1962, he joined the art faculty at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in both art history and art teacher preparation. He also served as chairman of the art education area for 18 years and was instrumental in the re-design of both the B.S. and M.Ed. degree programs in art education during that time. During a two-year leave from Edinboro University, he was employed as a teaching associate at The Ohio State University while completing doctoral coursework in urban design, art history and art education. After returning to Edinboro, he received Pennsylvania's Outstanding Art Educator Award in 1982. And, prior to his retirement in 1985, he was a recipient of the Edinboro University Art Achievement Award.

Throughout his career, he exhibited his drawings and paintings both nationally and locally. In retirement, he enjoyed writing, genealogy and the natural world.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shana Lea Howlett. Survivors include his widow, Joan Specht Howlett; a daughter, Dria Specht Howlett, of Ann Arbor, Michigan; a brother, Derq Howlett, of West Chester, Pa.; and three nieces and five great-nieces and nephews.

There will be no services.

Love and prayers for you, Aunt Joan and Cousin Dria. I will so miss passing our family information back and forth and hunting all of the missing links with Dorn. He was my inspiration, and I wouldn't have the fascination for genealogy, the interest in writing or the love for art that I do, were it not for him.

The neat thing about taking classes from Dorn was……..Some of the stuff would sink back into your brain, and would pop out when you needed it. "Oh, yeah! I learned that from Dorn!"

I think Edinboro should name an art building Howlett Hall. Dorn influenced so many people while he taught there.

Dria and Joan, I am saddened and share your grief at the loss of Dorn. He was truly a remarkable man, and well liked. the world is now diminished with the loss of a dashingly debonaire daddy Dorn.
