Harry Chapin Obituary

Harry K. Chapin Beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather Harry K. Chapin, age 83, of Millcreek died Sunday, June 5, 2005 at St. Mary’s at Asbury Ridge. Born in Cambridge Springs, Pa. on March 13, 1922 he was the son of the late Harry G. and Virginia Grimes Chapin. He was a graduate of Millcreek High School, Class of 1940 and had attended the University of Tennessee. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army stationed in both the European and South Pacific Theaters. He retired from the General Electric Company in 1985 following 44 years of service. He was also the owner and operator of Chapin’s Cut Rate Variety Store in the 1960’s. He was an Eagle Scout and Boy Scout Leader; a member of the American Legion Post #773, the Zukor Club, the East Erie Turners, the GE Quarter Century Club; and was a founding member of St. Jude Church where he also served as an usher for many years. Mr. Chapin loved hunting, fishing, woodcarving, gardening, his computer, and hiking. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lillian Hanchin Chapin; and two daughters, Cheryl Devine and her husband Robert and Kimberly Skadhauge and her husband Scott, all of Fairview. He is further survived by four grandchildren, Erin Devine, of Fairview, Meghan Devine and her husband Matthew, of Huntsville, Ala., and Lindsay and Erik Skadhauge, of Fairview. Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home 3816 West Lake Road on Wednesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Jude Church on Thursday at 11 a.m. with Monsignor Robert Brugger presiding. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Emmaus Soup Kitchen, 218 East 11th Street, Erie PA 16507 or the International Institute, 517 East 26th Street, Erie PA 16504 Arrangements will be announced by the Burton Funeral Home 3816 West Lake Road.
