Hubert Snyder Obituary

Hubert F. "Hugh" (Rusty) Snyder, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at his residence. He was born November 29, 1933 in Erie, Pa., son of the late Samuel J. and Helen J. (Eckstein) Synder.

He graduated from Academy High School in 1951, and continued his education in Erie and Buffalo and began his engineering career at Altof Iron Works, continued on to Cook Doyle Steel and Amthor Structural Steel, retiring from the Energy Division of Zurn Industries in 1990. He was also an accomplished, self-taught architect and designed several commercial and industrial buildings in the tri-state area.

A longtime member of the Air Force Association, Rusty was part of the group that sponsored and produced the Great Erie Air Shows of the 1960s. As a sport aviation enthusiast, he had flown several types of aircraft, but his greatest thrill came at the 1967 air show, when he had the opportunity to fly with Blue Angel 7, in the Grumman F9F-8T Cougar.

While he enjoyed hunting, he was especially fond of competing in clay target sports, which he did from Canada to Florida, attending the World Trapshooting Tournament many times when it was held in Vandalia (Dayton), Ohio.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Amateur Trapshooting Association, Ducks Unlimited, Dove Sportsmen's Society, Bay City Gun Club and Gem City Outdoorsmen.

Rusty will always be remembered as a wonderful loving husband, father and grandfather. On this day, the Angels wrapped their arms around my love and guided him to Heaven to be met by our son Jeffrey.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey D. Snyder and grandson, Kevin M. Rutkowski.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Patricia (Barczynski) Snyder; two daughters, Cynthia (Paul) Groszkiewicz and Brenda Snyder; a son, Gregory (Vicky) Snyder; seven grandchildren, Melissa (Eric) Porsch, Amy Groszkiewicz, Jennifer and Austin Snyder, Ryan (Stacey) Snyder and Rachel and Emily Rutkowski; six great-grandchildren, Clara Porsch, Julian Wright, Brianna, Brooklyn, Abigail and Chloe Snyder, as well as two sisters, Delores Catalde and Arlette Sharp and several nieces and nephews.

At Rusty's request, no calling hours will be observed. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Graveside Service at 11:00 a.m. at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery, Section 10, on Friday, August 23, 2013.

In lieu of flowers, please made a donation to the Great Lakes Hospice at 877-6120 or Hunt of a Lifetime, P.O. Box 241, Harborcreek, PA 16421.

The Edward J. Garr Funeral Home, Inc., 459 East 12th Street, Erie, PA 16503, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Snyder and family, I am very saddened in the loss of Rusty. He was a very good friend of mine and my family's. as sick as he was, he made an effort to show up at my dads funeral graveside service, that must've been very hard for him to do because of his health. my family and I were very touched by that and we will never forget that. you all are in my thoughts and prayers.

Rusty possessed an endearing personality that made him immensely popular with family and friends. People liked to talk with him ~ whether it was about the Civil War, hunting, antique cars, politics ~ or maybe just the day's news.
My deepest sympathy to Pat and to Greg ~ as well as to all others of the Snyder family. Rusty will be sorely missed. Jo Ann Goodell, Austin, TX

Snyder Family,
Please accept my deepest sympathy in this time of loss. I worked with Rusty back at Zurn and learned a lot from him. Went to school with his son Jeff at Tech Memorial. Always had much respect for the Rusty and family.
May he rest in peace with God.
