James Whitcher Obituary


James W. Whitcher, age 93, of Salem, Va., and formerly of Erie, Pa., passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2014. He was born on August 9, 1920 in Erie, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Ross and Margaret (Wallace) Whitcher.

James served in the United States Army during World War II, and was an active participant in the Allied D-Day invasion. He worked as a tool and die maker for many years, until his retirement. He was very well respected in his field and served as a consultant for several years after his retirement.

He was a member of Elmwood Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed his vegetable garden and fishing for walleyes on Lake Erie.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Ruth (Shields) Whitcher, his son Ross Whitcher and his brother Francis R. Whitcher.

James is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Ann Scalera, husband Albert of Salem, Virginia, five grandchildren, Joseph Scalera, wife Karen, James Scalera, wife Mitzi, Lisa Scalera Beck, husband Joey, Bethany Whitcher and Andrew Whitcher; and two step-great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Madison. Nieces and nephews Ann, Carol, David and Michael and their families also survive.

Friends are invited to call on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street. Services will be held there on Saturday at 1 p.m. with Rev. Andrew Holmes. Burial will be in North East Cemetery, with full military honors.
