Joan Butler Obituary

Joan Louise (Magee) Butler, 81, of Union City, passed into the arms of her Savior on Sunday, December 27, 2020 after an extended illness.

She was born in Union City on March 4, 1939, to the late Charles and Doris Barber Magee.

Joan graduated in 1957 from Union City Area High School, and then attended Ora Jean Beauty Academy for Cosmetology. She later married Richard Nile Butler and together, they raised their four children on a dairy farm just outside of Union City. She worked various jobs throughout the years which included Union Bank, Union City Memorial Hospital, Troyer Brothers, Integra Bank and Northwest Bank. She also owned the Union City Christian Book Store for several years. Joan was a faithful and involved church member, and she played the piano and organ at her church and helped with administrative duties. Family was the most important thing to Joan, and she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In many ways, Joan seemed larger than life. She believed in things passionately and selflessly threw herself into caring for anyone who needed her help. There was no person above or below the notice of Joan's generosity and compassion.

In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband Richard and two sisters, Lois Rockwell and Beth Rockwell.

She is survived by her two daughters, Cindy (Gary) Wells of Union City and Sonya (Douglas) Nelson of Erie; two sons, Richard (Renee) Butler of Nashville, Tenn. and Brian (Alison) Butler of Wattsburg; eleven grandchildren, Jason (Jessica) Barteldt of Uniontown, Pa.; Rechelle (Michael) Kennedy of Belle Vernon, Pa.; Lynn (Jonathan) Taylor of Columbus, Ohio; Kristen Nelson of Morgantown, W. Va.; Wendy Nelson of Erie; Brooke Butler of Wattsburg; and Presley and Reed Butler of Nashville, Tenn.; Jessica (Bart) Wilkinson of Meadville, Boolanchai Ketsirithawinwong of Pittsburgh, and Uriah Wells of Austin, Texas. She is further survived by eleven great-grandchildren; her brothers Alan (Marie) Magee of Columbus, Ohio and Noel (Christine) Magee of Rochester, N.Y.; many nieces and nephews, and many more whose lives she touched.

Family and friends are welcome to call on Thursday, December 31, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Union City Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 2 Dowman Street, Union City, with the funeral service to follow at 12:00 p.m. with Rev. Aunt Jo, as we called her growing up, was one of the most influential and inspirational women I have been graced to know. Her kind heart, pleasant manner, and graceful demeanor were legendary. She touched so many lives, more than any of us could possibly know. Until we meet again.....

Blessings to Joan's family and friends as we remember good times. Close family lived next door, so our relationship started as small children and touched now and then over these years.
Be comforted in Jesus's Name. Amen.

I have many fond memories of Joan. We sang together in a ladies' trio at Calvary Baptist and had numerous chats before, during, and after our practices. More recently, we enjoyed a dinner cruise on Lake Erie with Joan, her treat. She will be missed.
