John Van Cise Obituary



John R. Van Cise, 81 of Girard, died Wednesday December 11, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born December 2, 1932 in North Girard (now Lake City), a son of the late Russell and Mary Killian Van Cise.

John graduated from the Rice Avenue Union High School in 1952 where he was active in many sports, and excelling in football for the Yellow Jackets.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952 during the Korean Conflict and later deployed as a Machinist Mate, 3rd Class aboard the USS Randolph CA-15 Aircraft Carrier. While aboard the Randolph, John sailed the Mediterranean Sea many times with the 6th Fleet.

He later returned home following his discharge and worked as a Machinist for Zurn Industries, retiring from there in 1994 with over 34 years of service.

He was a life Member of the Girard American Legion Post #494, where he was past Commander in 1999-2000 and also a member of the Edinboro-McKean VFW Post #740.

John enjoyed deer hunting, camping, especially having dinner and a beer with the "Saturday Night Gang".

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Taylor and two grandsons.

He is survived by his wife, Edwinna Grove Van Cise, whom he married December 29, 1956 in Lake City; four daughters, Lee (Gerald) Keller, Gerri Rist all of Girard, Tina (Ronald) Lindsey of Waterford and Jonna Van Cise of Albion; five grandsons, one granddaughter; four great grandchildren; a sister in law, Cheryl Nunemaker (Earl) of Dunnellon, Fla.; a brother in law, Ronald Taylor of East Springfield and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Sunday from 12 noon to the time of service at 2 p.m. at Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation, 130 W. 8th St., Erie, PA 16501 or to the ANNA Shelter 1555 E. 10th St., Erie, PA 16511

John's family would like to thank the Regional Home Health and Hospice for all of their care, especially, Melissa, Kathy and Debbie.
