Matthew Debevec Obituary

Matthew G. Debevec Matthew G. Debevec, late of Millcreek Township, succumbed peacefully, Friday, December 10th after a protracted struggle with cancer. He was born November 2, 1920, in Forest City, Pa., the fourth of six children of Matthew and Mary Planishek Debevec. Matt proudly served his country as a medical corpsman during World War II. After being discharged from the Army, he moved to Erie and was employed by GE for 32 years. He loved to fish and garden and was very proud of his Slovene heritage. During his retirement Matt traveled extensively throughout the U.S. He had been an active member of St. George’s parish for many years and during the past 25 years he was a parishioner of Our Lady of Peace. He was a member of many social clubs in Erie and a life member of the Siebenbuerger, South Erie Turners and Sunflower clubs. Matt was a proud and doting father and in 1980, tragically lost his treasured son and only child, 27 year old Dennis. A sister, Mary Debevec, and brothers, Frank and Ludric, as well as step sons Ralph and Robert Owen, preceded Matt in death. He is survived by Helen Owen Debevec, a brother, Tony, in Reidsville, Ga. And a sister, Lucy Bostaph, of Kane. Matt is also dearly beloved and survived by stepdaughter, Jan Cornwell. Other survivors include Ellen Jarvis and several nieces and nephews. Calling on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Brugger Home for Funerals, West 38th St. at Greengarden Blvd. Father Thomas Brooks will conduct a parlor service on Sunday at 4 p.m. Private interment on Monday in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
