Melvin Hathaway Obituary

Melvin Hathaway, 75, of Albion, Pa., passed away on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa.

He was born in Tamms, Ill., on March 1, 1945 to the late Viola Thomas Hathaway and Darnell Hathaway.

Melvin attended Egytian High School in Tamms, Ill. and then relocated to Erie, Pa. for better work opportunities.

In 1971 he asked the former Geraldine Esters for her hand in marriage and began their lives as a union.

He held various jobs working as an X-ray technician, gas attendant and retired as a welder from Zurn Industries after 25 years of service.

Melvin was a true outdoorsman and enjoyed working with his hands and tools around the house and gardening. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed doing so with his dearest buddies, Willie Henderson and Norvell McMathis. He was a member at Victory Christian Center Cathedral and was saved under the leadership of Bishop Dwane Brock. When needed he was ready and willing to help around the church.

His kind and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by everyone he encountered.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by twelve siblings; Nora Barnes, Helen Gibson, Robert Hathaway, Leroy Hathaway, George Hathaway, Margaret Jones, Leonard Hathaway, Thomas Hathaway, Ernestine Wright, Viola Hathaway, Vernell Hathaway and Barnell Hathaway.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 49 years, Rev. Geraldine Hathaway of Albion, Pa.; two daughters, Tashanna Hathaway of Erie, Pa. and Comocrea Johnson (Aaron) of Pittsburgh, Pa.; five grandchildren, Nakita Cook, Paris Lee, Ajayla Johnson, Calise Johnson and Isaiah Johnson; sister, Ethel Butler of Chicago, Ill., and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins and friends.
