Richard Hammer Obituary

Richard L. "Richie" Hammer, age 89, of Erie, passed away peacefully, at home, with family by his side, on Thursday, January 5, 2017, following a brief illness. He was born in Erie, on October 25, 1927, son of the late Carl and Anna Hammer.

Richie was a proud member of the Teamsters Local Union #397. He was a truck driver for many years and retired from Roadway Express after 32 years of service. Richie was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during WWII. He was a life member of the Sunflower Club, where he loved and enjoyed working after retirement to spend time with his friends. He was also a life member of the Siebenbuerger Club. Richie enjoyed spending time with his family, and his humor will be sadly missed, which he loved sharing with his family and friends, right up till the end.

Richie is survived by five children, Linda Janda (David), Sandra Minor (David), Rick Hammer (Jean), Tim Hammer (Joan), and Jeff Hammer; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; as well as many special brothers and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his wife and love of his life for 62 years, Ruth "Dahling" Hammer; one sister, Millie Biletnikoff; and five brothers, Jack, Ray, Charles, Robert, and James Hammer.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Richie's wonderful caregiver, Janet of Great Lakes Hospice, who was appreciated for her attentiveness and always only being a phone call away.

Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., 2607 Buffalo Rd., on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and are invited to attend a Funeral Service there on Monday at 10 a.m. conducted by Rev. Erik Young. Military honors will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Erie Crawford County Veterans Burial Detail. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be designated to Great Lakes Hospice, 1700 Peach Street, Ste. 244, Erie, PA 16501, or the PA Soldiers' and Sailors' Home, Activity Fund, 560 East 3rd Street, Erie, PA 16507.

To Linda, Sandy, Rich, Tim, Jeff and family,

Our condolences on the passing of your Dad.

Uncle Rich was a good man, we never had a bad word between us.

I remember his sense of humor and Aunt Ruthie's laugh (it was a great laugh).

I believe they're together again.

Cousins Mark (and son Jeff)

Papa things will never be the same without you no matter how you were feeling you always had something funny to make people laugh, I will never forgot one time when we were having dinner at your an ma's old house on Glenwood Park Ave and someone had brought these little corn on the cobs (you see them in stir fry) you picked it up like a piece of corn on the cob and started biting the little pieces off I and you were not being funny I think you really wanted to eat it that way, one of many things to laugh about when thinking of you, everytime I see a tip board or go gambling I pray that you are with me and give me some of your good luck, rest in peace Papa you will be missed dearly.. Love you always and forever Tina/Halena

I am so sorry to hear of Uncle Richie's passing. He will be truly missed. I will always remember his boisterous laugh, funny jokes, and how he loved dancing with your mom. I'm sure they are having a dance together right now. The Hammer boys are finally all together and probably having a beer or two and one big party. You guys are in my prayers.
Love,
Sue

Happy trails to you til we meet again....
