Sally Metcalf Obituary


Sally Ann Metcalf, age 84, of Erie, Pa., died peacefully on Wednesday evening, December 17, 2014, with family by her side.

Sally was born in Fargo, North Dakota, on October 8, 1930, the daughter of the late Robert Elmore and Ruth Eliot (Richards) Flynn. Sally graduated from All Saints School in Sioux Falls, S.D., and attended Pine Manor College in Wesley, Mass. She worked for various insurance companies before focusing on being a mother and housewife. She was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church and the Erie Maennerchor Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter, Karra Lynn Poole in 1990, her husband, John R. Metcalf, Jr. in 1999, her stepson John R. Metcalf III in 2002, and her brother, Robert Eliot "Mick" Flynn and his wife Dorothy of Edina, Minn., both within the last year.

She is survived by two sons, David E. Poole and his wife Amita of Alexandria, Va., and Michael W. Poole and his wife Vicky of Dover Delaware; a daughter, Elizabeth Young of Erie; grandchildren Matthew, Nicole and Brooke Young, and Michael, Danielle and Trevor Poole; and two great-grandchildren, Ricardo and Gabrielle. She is also survived by a stepson, Steven Metcalf and his wife Nancy; stepdaughter, Sarah Metcalf and her husband George Kribel, and her step-grandchildren, Audrey, Laura, Jane, Chloe and Simon Metcalf.

Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street (at Powell Avenue), on Friday, December 26th from 2 until 4 and 6 until 8 p.m., and are invited to attend a service there on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Michael Polinek officiating. Interment will follow in Erie Cemetery.

Dear David and Michael, we join in your grief of the death of your wonderful mother. She had such a loving and generous spirit about her. She loved life to its fullest and always made you feel you were the most important person in her life. We will miss your mother but we savor many grand memories of our times together with her. You will be in our hearts and prayers on the 26th and 27th at 11:00 AM. We are very sorry we are unable to make the trip to Erie to be with all of you. If you ever get to Naples, FL please contact us. We would love to see you.
