Thelma Butler Obituary

Thelma J. Butler, age 87, of Erie, passed away on January 7, 2021. She was born in Jackson, Tenn., on February 28, 1933, a daughter to the late John and Annie Mae Fleming Martin.

She graduated from Merry High School in Jackson, Tenn., class of 1951. She moved to Erie to be with her brother and sister. She met the love of her life Raymond Butler. They raised five children together. Once the kids were old enough, she began her 36+ year career as a librarian for the Erie City School District. She was an active member of Second Baptist Church, helping with Sunday school and serving as the Sunday school secretary. She also enjoyed the Church's prayer meetings. This quiet but vibrant woman gave love to her family and community.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Raymond P. Butler, her daughter Rita C. Butler and her siblings Willie Griffin, Ezell Martin, Robert Martin and Bernice Martin.

Thelma is survived by four children: Michael Butler, twins Marva and Marcia Butler, and Gloria Butler, all of Erie; step daughter Marsha Bulter of Los Angeles, Calif.; two grandchildren: Jarrett A. Butler and Rayshawn Butler; three siblings: Jessie R. Woodson of Erie, Helen Porter of Jackson, Tenn., and Lorraine Lee of Erie, Pa.; and a special friend who was like a daughter, Kim Overton, along with nieces, nephews, friends, and church family
