Bernard Caton Obituary

Bernard William "Bernie" Caton

September 6, 1928 -

October 12, 2025

ERWIN - Bernard William "Bernie" Caton, 97, of Erwin, Tennessee, went home to our Lord peacefully on October 12, 2025. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend, Bernie's life was marked by quiet strength, faith, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the world around him.

Born on September 6, 1928, in Fairfax, Virginia, Bernie was the son of Howard and Della Caton. Growing up in Virginia instilled in him a lifelong love for the outdoors, where he found joy in the simple pleasures of hunting, fishing, nature watching and gardening. He carried those values throughout his life, sharing them generously with his family and all who knew him.

Bernie lived a life grounded in faith and guided by love. A devout Christian, he embodied compassion, grace, and humility, finding meaning in service to his loved ones and community. He was an avid traveler who delighted in exploring new corners of the world, often remarking on the wonder and diversity of God's creations. Despite his worldly adventures, Bernie's greatest fulfillment came from time spent at home, surrounded by his family.

On June 3, 1950, Bernie married the love of his life, Margaret L. Dixon. Their union was one of steadfast devotion and mutual respect, a partnership that endured over seventy-five years and served as an example to their children and grandchildren. Together, they built a home filled with laughter, faith, and love - a reflection of Bernie's gentile spirit and generous heart.

Bernie is survived by his wife, Margaret, his sons, Bernard W. Caton II (Connie) and David M. Caton (Dorothy); daughter, Susan L. Caton Caba (Enrique); six grandchildren, Matthew (Amy), Sarah (Adam), Carri (Brian), Jonathan (Erin), Bernie (Courtney), and Eric; twelve great grandchildren, Naomi, Atira, Cole, Caileigh, Thomas, Mason, Charlotte, Madilyn, Will, Arya, Evie, and Elly; his sister, Jeannie Wray and brother, Roland Caton. His parents and brothers, Jack, George, Leonard, Marshall and sisters, Katie and Elsie predeceased him.

Those who knew Bernie will remember his humility, curiosity, and unwavering faith. He believed in living life fully. His legacy endures in those he loved and in the countless lives he touched through his warmth and integrity. He will be deeply missed.

His greatest desire was for his family and all those he who knew him to see the love of Christ through him and to receive the gift of salvation.

A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 am on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at Pierce Funeral Home in Manassas, VA, with luncheon and graveside service to follow.

Philippines 1:6 "being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus".
