Francis Grove Obituary

Maj. Francis Miller 'Pappy' Grove, U.S. Air Force Retired, 82, of Montgomery, Ala., died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at home. He was the husband of Anna Mazie Foley Grove. Maj. Grove joined the Army Air Corps in 1939. He was also a member of the Army Field Artillery and later the Air Force. He flew PT 17s; Vulture Vibrators; AT 6s; P 40s; and Red-nosed Mustangs, or P 51s, with the Fourth Fighter Group and logged 275 combat hours on 63 missions. He was a member of the VFW, the Order of Daedalians, the Quiet Birdman, the American Legion and the Dalraida United Methodist Church. He was active in prison ministries and volunteered in corrections. He was active the United Methodist Men; lay leadership; the Civil Air Patrol; and Lanier's PTA; and was founder and president of three Toastmasters International clubs in Montgomery. Surviving also are two sons, Alan Francis Grove, and his wife, B. Rebecca Champion; and David Andrew Grove, and his wife, Belinda S. Davis; five grandchildren; and a greatgrandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Francis and Hattie Marie Miller Grove; a sister, Rosia Anita G. Slagle; and a brother, Llewellyn Andrew, all of Hanover. A memorial service conducted by the Rev. Fred Fuller will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Dalraida United Methodist Church. Visitors will be greeted following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Cancer Society or to Dalraida UMC's Memorial Garden.
