John Summers Obituary

NEW OXFORD John H. Summers, Sr., 93, died Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at The Brethren Home Community. He was the husband of Steinie L. (Bowser) Summers, who died July 9, 2008. John was born August 11, 1921, in Mt. Union, the son of the late William F. and Grace P. (Jones) Summers. John was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Oxford, and proudly served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII. He owned H&S Supply in New Oxford for 45 years, and was a member of Hebron Lodge #465 in New Oxford. John is survived by a son, John H. Summers, Jr. and his wife, Belinda of Abbottstown; a daughter, Patricia A. Hafer and her husband, Homer of New Oxford; nine grandchildren, Amy Johnson of New Oxford, Andrew Hafer of Owego, N.Y., Abby Alexander of Lancaster, Neiley Shea Royston of San Rafael, Calif., Liza Shea of Groton, Conn., Josh Summers of New Oxford, Adams Summers of Hanover, Sheanon Summers of New Oxford, and John Summers, III of Cambridge, Mass.; and 17 great-grandchildren, Londyn Johnson, Beckett Hafer, Wyatt Alexander, Camryn Royston, Lachlan Royston, Seamus Greaves, Aidan Greaves, Daniel Summers, Kyla Summers, Mason Danke, Emerson Alexander, Nusha Summers, Leo Summers, Misha Summers, Aubrey Summers, Gavin Summers, and Dashiell Hafer. He was predeceased by a daughter, Sandra L. Summers; two brothers, William and Donald Summers; and a sister, Jane Chiodi. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at 2 p.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 Lincolnway East, New Oxford, with the Rev. Cynthia A. Chambers officiating. Burial will be in New Oxford Cemetery. A viewing will be held at the church on Saturday from 12 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VNA/Hospice, 440 N. Madison St., Hanover, PA 17331. Feiser Funeral Home, Inc., 302 Lincolnway West, New Oxford, is in charge of arrangements. Patti, John and Families:
I am so sorry for your loss. Losing your mom gave you SOME preparation for the loss of your dad. Losing a parent is hard to explain unless you've gone through it. Your mom and dad were always the best looking couple in the Lutheran Church; I will always remember watching them on Sundays march to the front of the church for communion thinking how distinguished and good looking they always were. Funny the things that stand out in a small kid's memory. They were as sweet and loving as they were good looking. I know you will miss him terribly; my thoughts and prayers will be with you during your time of sorrow.

My Uncle was more than an ordianry uncle. I never saw nor knew my paternal grandfather. Uncle John was that grandfatherly for me and I couldn't have loved him anymore if he had been my actual grandfather. He was the most caring,loving and GIVING person that anyone could have had the blessing to have known. I have so many fond memories of gathering at Uncle John and Aunt Steinie's home. There was always so much to eat and many, many hugs and kisses to go around! I feel so fortunate to have spent precious time with my uncle after Dad passed. He was a comfort and brought so much joy to me just to be around him. I know that he and Dad are having a wonderful reunion and look forward to the day when we all will be together again. Love you always Uncle John.
