Alan Soderstrom Obituary

Alan Soderstrom
Edmond - On Saturday, May 29th, 2021, Alan Soderstrom, of Edmond, Oklahoma, loving husband and father of two, passed away at the age of 74.
Alan was born in Pawhuska, Oklahoma on November 27th, 1946 to Don and Maxine Soderstrom. He was a 1965 graduate of Pawhuska high School. He joined the Marine Corps in March of 1966 and requested a tour of active duty in Vietnam. While serving in Vietnam he earned the Navy Commendation with Combat V for heroism. Upon return from his tour he married his high school sweetheart, Marie Catherine Dawson, on April 5, 1965. They had two children, daughter Cristin and son Clint. Alan received his degree in education from UCO. He taught at and helped found Heritage Hall's football program and later spent 38 years working in lumber sales.
Alan was an avid fisherman and hunter, enjoyed photography and wood working, and he loved Edmond Bulldog football and basketball games which he attended regularly for over forty years. He loved music and singing. Alan was also a passionate patriot, and committed to supporting veterans. He regularly participated in motorcycle rides on his beloved Harley to support veterans and other charities.
His joy in supporting his country and community were only matched by his love for family. Alan was preceded in death by his father and mother Donald Leo Soderstrom and Martha Maxine Soderstrom. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Marie, his daughter Cristin Clements, of Edmond, Oklahoma, her three children Grayson, Gavin, and Dawson, along with his son-in-law Ben Clements, his son Clint Soderstrom, of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, his four children Bella, Max, Hattie, and Zeke, along with his daughter-in-law Chesney Soderstrom, his two sisters and their husbands, Jim and DeeDee Burton and Jesse and Mary Don Storts, his Cousin Patricia Soderstrom and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Alan was a man of few words, but when he spoke, others listened and respected him. His commitment to treating others the way he wanted to be treated made him the heart of his family, and he will be sorely missed.
Graveside service was held at the Pawhuska Cemetery in Pawhuska, Oklahoma on Sunday June 6th at 1:00. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Dale K Graham Veterans Foundation in memory of Alan.

I shared several classes one summer at UCO with Alan. Music for Elementary Teachers was one of them. I had already been out teaching Elementary Music for a semester, so it was a piece of cake for me. Alan was always a pleasant fun guy to be around. Unfortunately I did not have contact with him after that summer. Such a great guy. Sorry to see this. Condolences to his family.

Alan and Marie entered our lives almost almost 20 years ago when their wonderful and extraordinary son, Clint, met and married our daughter, Chesney, while both where attending Oklahoma State University. Through the years we have grown to respect, admire, and love the Soderstrom family. And have been extremely blessed by sharing 4 amazing grandchildren together Bella, Max, Hattie, and Zeke. With saddened and heavy hearts we offer our most sincere condolences and may you be blessed with many loving memories.

Coach was a great friend to my Mom and Dad. He was instrumental in helping Dad pioneer new bridge-building techniques when they were in their infancy. Coach was more than a coach to so many of us. For those of us that he coached, he was a cross between a big brother or a young uncle - he could put us in a headlock and teach us to escape - grinning and laughing with us. Coach was a young man who had already earned the wrinkles on his brow looking after the Marines on his left and right - the foundation of the Marine Corps Ethos. He taught us how to cope with the teenage years and how to be prepared for young adulthood without us realizing what he was doing. Coach had signed a blank check made payable to our Republic for up to and including his life. He came home and grabbed for his first Brass Ring. Coach caught that ring, his one true love, and what a team they have been as a family with an enormous extended family - whether they wanted us or not. Please, no red marks, Mrs. Soderstrom. Coach's life lessons were enriched by those of Mrs. Soderstrom. Both gave of their time willingly. Even after Coach left the Education/Athletic Coaching Profession, he continued the same caring and giving personal program that he had followed all of his life. I dropped in a few time in the early days of his professional life in lumber. Huston Lumber was a great place and Dad's Company had subleased space there at one time. Coach was just what they needed. No matter where Coach was on 16th or 10th or enjoying his kid's or any Edmond Memorial contest, Coach and Mrs. S, have proved that sharing their hearts will make the largest impact on each generation of our youth. Coach was at the tip of the spear in actual battle for the forces of Liberty and continued to support his fellow veterans. He was also at the tip of the spear in shaping the hearts and minds of generations of future leaders. I am better for having been mentored by Coach and Mrs. S. My daughter and my grandson are better people from lessons I learned from Coach and Mrs. S. As long as a Warrior's names is spoken from the heart and the Warrior's deeds of bravery and goodness recounted for our children, then the Warrior lives on. Coach Soderstrom lives on.
