Freddy Hurst Obituary

Freddy Hurst, 61, of Houston passed away suddenly on October 29 while on a business trip to Guatemala. Freddy is survived by his wife Kim, daughters Annie Lea and her husband Josh Koehn of Houston, Texas, and Morgan Ray of Stillwater, Oklahoma, brother Connie Hurst of Haskell, Oklahoma, sister-in-law Sally Coble of Houston, Texas, sister-in-law Kathy Woodrell and partner Cindy Atwood of Alexandria, Virginia, step father-in-law Don Woodrell of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, niece Shena and husband Heath McDaniel of Coweta, Oklahoma and their daughters Addyson and Aubrey, nephews Nathan and Raymond Jack Hurst and Raymond's son Jackson of Haskell, Oklahoma, nephew Dylan Powell of Houston, Texas, niece Dana and husband Kenny Burgan of Houston, Texas and their sons Brandon and Trevor. Freddy was preceded in death by his parents Ray and Sybil Hurst, his in-laws Jack and Sally Harris, his nephew David James Coble and his sister-in-law Helen Strickland.
Freddy was, as he loved to say, the original "Okie from Muskogee," having been born in the Muskogee General Hospital on August 22, 1952. He was raised in Haskell, Oklahoma, and graduated from Oklahoma State University with his MBA in 1976 and Rutgers Graduate School of Banking in 1983. He married Kim Harris in 1986 and they began their life together in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He, Kim and Annie moved to Houston from Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 1993 and were blessed by the birth of their true Texan Morgan in 1995. He loved Houston, often saying he wasn't born in Texas but got here as fast as he could. Freddy enjoyed a lifelong career in banking and at the time of his death served as Bank Office President, Allegiance Bank–Woodway. Those who knew him would say that his love of banking was only exceeded by his love for his family and friends. Freddy learned to fly as a teenager and that passion continued until his death: he asked to be laid to rest overlooking the runway at his hometown of Haskell, Oklahoma, where he took his first flight.
As a banker and passionate volunteer, Freddy was extremely active in the community but his proudest contribution was his role in the founding of the West Houston Leadership Institute. He served on the board of the West Houston Medical Center, the Gulf Coast Division Advisory Board of the Hospital Corporation of America and was active in the West Houston Chamber of Commerce. At the time of his death, he was in the process of restoring his beloved 1955 Chevy truck purchased in 1976 from Oklahoma State University for $50. Freddy loved a bargain, the Oklahoma State Cowboys, travel, food, wine and fishing. He was the consummate entertainer and was known around the kitchen as the "supervisor." His favorite saying was "I have to do it all."
Friendships were very important to Freddy and this was demonstrated by the countless friends he stayed in close touch with from all walks of life. His daughters were the love of his life and he was lucky enough to welcome a son-in-law into the family at Annie's wedding this past June. Freddy went through life emptying his bucket list and left no regrets other than his family's sorrow at his passing.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 3 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77079. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, November 4 at 3:00 p.m. at Memorial Drive Christian Church, 11750 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77024. A Graveside Service will be held Saturday, November 9th at 2:00 p.m at the Haskell Cemetery under the direction of Dowdy Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be directed to West Houston Leadership Institute, 10370 Richmond Avenue, Houston, Texas 77042 or the LPG Charity Fund, 3 Riverway, Suite 130, Houston, Texas 77056 or via www.lpgfund.com.

Not sure what to say?

I have been informed just today of Freddy's death and my upmost profound condolences goes to his family. He gave me the opportunity as the first banker who went out of his way to help me and my partner in Texas City Texas. He always extended the olive branch and was honored to serve on his banks business development board and looked forward in visiting with him. He always gave me opportunity if needed and enjoyed his Holiday party at his home with numerous decorated trees. My prayers go to his family and will be missed but not forgotten. Thank You for helping me and my family. Dr. Tom Perez, III

Family and friends,

I walked into Allegiance Bank in May 2012 to open a new account and walked out with Freddy as a friend. I did not learn of his passing until today when I called to talk to him. I am shocked and saddened by his passing. I miss him!

Freddy and his brothers Teddy and Connie were our neighbors when their dad died in his field. The boys came to our house for help. Teddy driving the pick-up, and he was way to young, and the other two running beside him. That is the Freddy I remember. I moved away for many years but am back now. I am so sorry for your loss. Freddy's mama Flo was very good to me and my three sisters.

Dear Hurst Family,

We were saddened and shocked to hear of Freddy's passing. He was a wonderful person in our lives, not only as our banker for many years at Sterling Bank and more recently at Allegiance Bank Texas. But, also as a friend and fellow aviator whom we could enjoy plenty of "hangar talk" with when we visited him at the bank. We will miss him dearly. We hope that you will be comforted as you make your way through this very difficult time by the great memories you have had together as a family with Freddy in your midst. You all are in our thoughts and prayers.

I imagine Freddy sitting on a five gallon bucket in my vegetable garden with my daughter Kirby sitting on his lap sharing something fresh picked. He came into our lives at such a wonderful time, we were so blessed to know him as our our friend and neighbor. May God's blessings and grace shower you and your girls with loving comfort.

Dear Kin, Annie & Morgan: My heart is broken at the news of Freddy's passing. Freddy was, and will remain in my memory, as the embodiment of a man of Goodness, Sincerity and Love for life and his fellow man. Heaven's gain is certainly our loss. But how blest to have shared our time on earth with the likes of Freddy Hurst! My hope is that God grants our fondest wishes when we enter His Kingdom. There was nobody better than Freddy at getting people involved in the things he believed in - you just could not say NO to him!! He was a role model and mentor to so many people and his legacy will live on in all the programs he helped create across Houston. I know Freddy is sitting in heaven just chatting away with the Lord about what he can get involved in!! My prayers are with you and the girls Kim.

I will always cherish all of the wonderful memories that I have of Freddy Hurst. He was a great boss, a good teacher, a father figure to me at times and most of all a great leader in the banking industry. I was so blessed to have had the opportunity to work with Freddy as his assistant. When I started working for Freddy I had zero experience in lending but he did not mind he took me in anyway. He never got mad at me or frustrated with me as I was learning to be his assistant, he saw it as an opportunity to "train me right" he said. Freddy enjoyed taking people under his "wing" and sharing his many years of banking knowledge with them. One of his many favorite sayings that he used to say to me is "I am just like a big fuzzy cotton ball" ......and that he was!

My deepest condolences go out to his beautiful wife Kim and his beautiful daughters Annie and Morgan.

Dear Kim, Annie and Morgan,

I was one of Freddy's clients for many years. He was the loan officer for my architectural firm. And my late husband, Pat Davidson, was also one of Freddy's clients. We followed Freddy wherever he went because we enjoyed his wonderful happy personality and his great business sense. He was a joy to work with. I know how you feel right now, Kim, and I wish you strength and peace in the days to come. Please take care of each other.

Freddy was a true friend and inspiration to me and to others. He was an integral part of our West Houston Family and always advocated for the best for us all and then pursued making it happen for the greater good. He always talked about family with pride. We will miss his larger than life presence and can do attitude. No task was too big for Freddy and his heart was always in the right place. What a loss for us all.
