Dara Cox Obituary

Dara Gwen (Mennis) Cox, after a valiant 6 year fight with breast cancer, peacefully left this earth to travel back home to heaven on Sunday, March 9, 2014. She was in a room at KC Hospice House that was packed full of family and friends who loved her dearly. She had her hook attached to all of our hearts and took a little piece of each of us with her.

She will be missed by all of us, but especially by her two surviving daughters, Savannah (Anna) Cox and Gabriella (Abby) Cox, mother, Judy Oetting, and stepfather, Vaughn Oetting, who all lived together in Levasy, Mo.; her sister, Mary Pettet and husband, Timothy (KC); her brother, Jim McFarlane and wife, Cheryl (Buckner, Mo.); Tim Cox was her husband, father to Anna and Abby and a friend to the end; nephew, Erik McFarlane (world traveler); niece, Megan Covert (Parkville); nephew, Trevor King and family (Belinda, Raylene & Makala) (Buckner); and her "infinity gang of sister-cousins", Jayne Hartwig, Susie Munson, Felice Prine, Tanya Sargert, Trish Hernandez and Natasha Switzer; and a multitude of other much loved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Derril Mennis; sister, Julia Miles; grandfather, Leonard Sherman; grandmother, Charlotte Sherman Godfrey, and step grandfather, John Godfrey.

Dara was a member of Osage Hills Community of Christ. Her memorial will be held at Village Heights Community of Christ Church on Sunday, March 23. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m., followed with a service from 4 to 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Anna and Abby's educational fund at www.gofundme.com/HonorDara.

My condolences to the family. I remember Dara as a child and recently learned of your loss. I am sure that she was an outstanding teacher like her mom and aunt and who will be sorely missed by children, parents, and other family. May God sustain you in this valley.

Dear Cox Family;
What a beautiful picture of your wonderful loved one! As time pass, the memories you have of your loved one will never vanish for they will bring a smile to your heart. Dara, my sweet, amazing cousin-sister-friend, you really nestled yourself deep in my heart & soul. You're such a breath of fresh air. I miss you so very much & love you to infinity & beyond. I am so sad that I don't have you by my side to talk to & travel with, but I am comforted knowing that you are having a beautiful new journey & that someday I will be by your side & you can be my tour guide in Heaven. Love forever.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family. I remember Dara practicing volleyball with us when her mom and aunt was the coaches at Buckner Elementary. Dara was a caring and special lady that will be missed by all.
