Eugene Whelan Obituary
He was born at Walnut, Kansas, on December 6, 1928, the eldest son of Walter and Blanche Whelan. He graduated from Walnut High School in 1946. Since 1946 he has lived in the Kansas City area, except for ten years lived in Tennessee and Indiana between 1957 and 1966.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at New Salem Funeral Home, Independence. His funeral will be at New Hope Baptist Church, Independence, on November 6, at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Park Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it was Pastor Whelan's wish that money be given for missions at New Hope Baptist Church or Tri-City Baptist Church, Independence, where he worshiped the past five years.
Rev. Whelan pastored New Hope Baptist Church from December 1966 to July 1999. Previously he had pastored Baptist churches in Georgia and Indiana. Since resigning at New Hope, he engaged in supply preaching and teaching at International Bible College in Stony Brook, Long Island, New York. He received the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior in a citywide revival meeting at Kansas City Municipal Auditorium in 1950. He attended William Jewell College and the old Kansas City Bible College before completing his college work (B.A.) and seminary training (M.Th.) at Tennessee Temple in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1963.
Pastor Whelan is survived by his dear wife of 66 years, Betty June Starr Whelan of Stilwell, Oklahoma. His three children: Ron Whelan (Beverly) of Douglasville, Ga.; Kathy Perkins (David) of Overland Park, Kan.; and Dr Tim Whelan (Star), Jacksonville, Fla.. His five grandchildren: Diana Perkins, Austin, Texas; James Perkins, Shawnee, Kan.; Heather Whelan- Holt, Philadelphia, Pa.; Caleb Whelan, Douglasville, Ga.; and Ashleigh-Brooke Whelan, Atlanta, Ga. His three great-granddaughters: Samantha, Kylena, and Makayla.

I send Gods encouragement to the entire Whelan family. When I first trusted Jesus at the age of 25 in 1975-I attended New Hope for several years. I learned so much of Gods word from this man. I was part of the bus ministry along with Gracia Burnham and others. I attribute my continuing to follow Jesus to the firm foundation and Godly ministry-I attribute to the Whelan family! May the Lord bless you all as you follow Him!

Dear precious Whelan Family, I want to let you know our family is praying for each of you during this difficult time. It was our joy to have Pastor & Mrs. Whelan as our friends. Pastor Whelan told my husband one day, "Dear Friend, you know we are different." I think he was thinking about them still taking a stand for our Lord. We are thankful for the happy memories. Heaven is a little sweeter now with both our husbands there. Lots of love & prayers, Marlyn Rea & Family.

My love and prayers go out to the Whelan and Perkins families. I have some wonderful memories of Pastor and Mrs Whelan. They helped me through some emotional times and showed me such love and Godly maturity. Kathy I love you and pray for you at this difficult time and some day we will all meet again in heaven.
