Joan Walker Obituary
A celebration of life will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Drury Inn, 20300 E. 42nd St., Independence, MO 64015 in Meeting Room 109. Call 1-559-303-5610 for further information.
Joan was born in Kansas City, Mo., to Guy and Nelle Swinehart on November 25, 1928. She worked at the IRS and retired from the Social Security Administration in 1991. Joan was an avid reader, and enjoyed dining out, travel, playing bridge, bowling, and watching sports on TV-especially tennis. She was a member of Eastgate Christian Church. Joan graduated from Liberty High School in 1946 and from William Jewell College in 1951 with a degree in mathematics. She was a charter member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority at William Jewell.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Richard Swinehart; and her husband of 22 years, Carl E. Walker.
Survivors include brother, Dr. James Swinehart; sons, Dr. Steven (Robin) Walker, Mark (Joy) Walker and Neil (Debbie) Walker; daughter, Barbara Hartigan (fiancé, Bill Johnson); 9 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and a seventh due in March.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Children's Mercy Hospital, Shriners Hospital for Children, or your charity of choice.
